Hello, all!

I'm new to the forum, so, by way of introduction, here's a bit about me and my chickens:

I started my flock in spring of 2016 and now have 32 chickens and roosters of these types:
Leghorns of Brown, Silver, and Pearl White; Blue Andalusians; Wyandottes of Golden, Silver Laced and Columbian; Speckled Sussex; Plymouth Rocks both Partridge and Barred; New Hampshire Red; Black Australorp; Buff Orpington; Light Brahma; and 'Barnyard Mix'. I wish I had gotten chickens sooner; they are such fun!

We all have our favorites, and for hens, I like the friendliness and intelligence of the Speckled Sussex. The Pearl White Leghorns lay the most impressively large chicken eggs I have ever seen, but they are so skittish that they barely take treats from my hand, so I'm glad to have the Speckled Sussex that come up close and eye me inquisitively. My finest rooster is Mags (short for Mr. Magnificient), a New Hampshire Red who is known for being very good to his hens, as well as being intelligent and handsome.

My flock free-ranges over a few grassy and wooded acres during the day, and sleeps in a converted freestanding carport at night. The carport conversion was intended to be a chicken tractor, but ended up in a permanent spot as we got more birds and they all seem to do well free-ranging. Inside their chicken-wired carport, they roost at night on pieces of tree branch, but they also have a small homemade coop and nesting boxes in there. The coop gets more use when we have little chicks, as mama hen is raising them. We also have 9 cats on the property, and the chickens and the cats get along just fine. Sometimes the chickens look through the cat door, into the house, and wonder why they can't come inside, too---I love my flock, but I have to draw the line at letting chickens roam through my home!

I like to design and create jewelry using natural substances. During the chickens' last molt, I started collecting the best of the newly dropped feathers that were blowing around the property. I have a gallon jar of them and will soon (hopefully) be incorporating chicken feathers into my designs---I'm trying to determine if the chicken feathers will be clean enough...combining my interests in jewelry and chickens makes me happy.
