Great idea that's what I'll do I'll cover the holes with some hay bails. I'm thinking next week like Monday or Tuesday will be hatch day.

So today when I got up it was in the low 60's so I went to give my Jersey Giant hen straw to block those area's off. And she was off the nest. I was scared that she lost interest like my other broody hen earlier this summer. So all day while I was at work I was so scared she had given up. But she was back on the nest when I got home. I'm guessing since it was warmer today she decided that she could take a longer break. lol I'm just hoping this week goes fast !!!
Yes I only got to check 1egg from a newer pullet that just started laying in late August. I could tell because it was still on the smaller side. The only rooster I have is an EE. So they could be mixes of any thing from a buff orp, Jersey Giant, red laced wyandotte, silver laced wyandotte and blue laced wyandotte. So the mutts could look quite interesting . I would have liked more EE's but I have no idea where my 2 EE hens are laying because they free range all day. Their eggs are the only ones I can never find.
So I checked on the nest today because I'm thinking Sunday or Monday will be hatch day 1 of the eggs seems to have busted open and it smells but not like rotten eggs but the odor is still pretty strong hoping she gets off the nest some point tomorrow some of the eggs were heavily soiled i did manage to pull 1 egg out and clean it off. it was and EE egg so I'm excited about that, but pretty disappointed that yet again that an egg busted and soiled all the other eggs. Maybe i'll just move her all together. This is just like my broody Brahma earlier this year that went broody and 3 eggs busted but those eggs smelled rotten.I should have just checked all the eggs yesterday when i caught her off the nest.![]()
The day that my chicks were supposed to hatch an egg broke of mine and I gagged me it smelled so bad... I had to take my hen and all the chicks out to clean the box and then put then back in.... If they rot sometimes they explode...[/quote
So Yesterday another egg exploded today is day 19. I candled 1 egg I see an air sack but no veins so I guess I'll wait until Tuesday to see if and chicks hatch but I highly doubt it now. I think they all started to develop but ended up dying during the process. I'm pretty bummed.
