New Year Block swap

katsdar - loving your tree! Looks warm and inviting!

I've finished my blocks, but still need to trim them. It wasn't my first choice for blocks, but I was having problems getting the one I wanted to do into a 12" type block pattern. After a night of frustrating tries, I decided to look in one of my favorite children's books for inspiration. I loved using A Quiltmaker's Gift and A Quiltmaker's Journey by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail De Marcken in my classroom. Not just for story time, but math, art, English, history, etc. I could utilize it in almost all subjects, including those discussions about moral values. I have a couple of quilting books based on the quilts in the books and decided to go with a block that "can go wherever the Northwinds blow". We live in the forests of Northern Minnesota, so I thought it was fitting to do a Northwinds block. The blocks are rather muted in coloring but I think they work. I will try to get them sent out this week.

I have not started my mug rug, but have lots of ideas running around in my head (maybe the reason I haven't started it). It is next on my list of quilting to dos.

Just printed out my Weeping Angel pattern and oh my!!!!! Keep in mind this is a finished 12 inch block, it has about 30 individual sets, each set has from 5-15 individual sewn pieces of fabric!!!!!

That is about 300 pieces in one 12 inch block

Quite a few are SMALLER then the seam allowance!

I can't wait to see your blocks they sound inspiring. Earth tones are muted so I'm sure they are just beautiful. and your north winds sound cold right now so please keep them up there, it is just too cold here already. No hurry on the mug rug it is not due till the end of Jan. I googled your books and was able to read the Quiltmaker's Gift, what a lovely story and pretty blocks in both books. Thanks on the tree, I'm going to venture out tomorrow and I think I'm going to change the back ground and the sand we will see what I bring home.

I think the dates will stand out better with a different back ground. I was surprised how many fabric colors and small prints I lack in my stash when I started this project. The Quiltmaker's Gift was one of the library books I read for the kids who came to Summer Reading Programs they loved it, the art work always got them hooked.

wow kassaundra can't wait to see that block when you have it done

I really went through my stash and I have found a solid yellow, and a tan and a brown and I picked up a FQ of orangey/yellow for the back ground, so the colors should pop, glad this is just a test block, can't wait to see your tree RH, so will continue to play with colors

Kassaundra, I printed out that angel block because I really like it but it will be a long time till I get enough intestinal fortitude to attempt it.
