How exciting for you. What breed/s have you got? Your coop looks great!! Many of us were lurkers before signing up I was one for two years and so wish I had done it sooner.

Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat

You asked about the breeds....I'm sure that three of them are Autralorps. The other three...I'm not sure. The guy at TSC said they are a mix breed...and he said, but I honestly forgot what he said. Any idea from the photos?

Had a tragedy this week. All six were acting normal on Sunday. I put them up Sunday night. Monday morning when letting them out I found one dead face down on the coop floor. Her body was already stiff, so we lost her earlier in the night. Only got down to about 32 and the other five seemed fine as they are adjusting to the cold. I couldn't find anything obvious. My son was really shocked and sad.

Since she is gone...the other five dropped off egg production which may be fine due to the weather getting colder. They were each putting out one a day right up till losing the one chicken. Three eggs from the five each day since.

Tonight when I got home it was already dark and they had gone in the coop. When I went to close it up and check on them two of them were hunkering down on the floor next to the nesting box. Normally they all chirp and talk when I open the coop for any reason. They were all quiet tonight.

I got the two up and held them for a bit then put them on the roost. Nothing I could see unusual other than they were both a bit "stunned" acting - but it was already pitch black out and they may have been asleep. I just can't figure out why the two were down on the floor. Closed it all up. I'm a bit worried and can't think of anything in specific we've done wrong.

Very windy today but mild temps.

Praying they are all there in the morning chirping and happy.

So, this is kind of fun. Happy and sad. First of all - I lost my log in info for a while and had a hard time getting logged back in. But...I'm back. Looking back of my journey with my girls...it has been amazing. We made a lot of mistakes...and got a lot of it right thanks to all of your help.

Since we started this journey, we lost four of our original six. One unexplained when I opened the coop one morning and found dead on the floor...one that ate screws from our pole barn construction and died after a Vet tried to remove them, two from swelling up with fluid (one we lost due to not known how to treat, the other we drained and she lived on more for many months until whatever started the fluid build got her).

I added three more to the group from a farmer and lost one to a fox. I'm down to two of the original crew and two from the new.

We've moved the coop to two different houses since this started...and seen a ton of life change. In fact, our newest is adding THREE baby ducks that we just brought home two weeks ago. I have NO idea exactly how this is going to work...yet.

The coop has changed too - I'll upload pics soon. But over time we not only physically moved it from house to house, but I added solar power and automation to the doors and food with wi-fi cameras so we can travel away from home with ease for days at a time and don't need to rush home to open/close doors.

I was just watching that video I took in 2015...and my heart just melted thinking of the sweet girls that we raised...and lost, but gained more from having had them as part of our lives.

Thanks to all the members and resources here (that even when I wasn't logged in) we could read and learn.
