Hello everyone,
I am now in the planning stage of raising my own chickens for eggs. What kind (s) of chickens should I consider for eggs and brooding as well.
Thinking of building our first chicken coop as a family project as well.
Thanks

:welcome You just need do your homework . We can tell what we like but that may not work for you . My most broody chickens are my gold laced Wayndottes . They are good layers too. Medium to large light brown eggs . For blue eggs I think you can't beat EEs . the lay a nice color blue large egg . They are very good layers . The roosters are gentle too. I also have Black Copper Marans they lay large dark brown eggs that my sister calls maroon and says they make the best banana pudding :lau Your off to a good start just asking smart questions . Follow Kiki'sGirls advice and check out the breed reviews . If possible get a look at the adults before buying chicks . Enjoy your chicken adventure :frow

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice and links already so I'll just say hello!

The best broody (hen) breeds are usually not the best layers. When they are broody, they stop laying eggs. They start up again and then go broody. This may repeat several times in a year.

I'm thinking Buff Orps, Silkies, Cochins. The best laying breeds usually are just that because they don't go broody.
