Well, I guess that depends on why you are raising them. It's probably a good idea to know if for not other reason than to be able to look things up. Maybe they will lay blue eggs instead of white or brown as you were expecting and you are a little freaked out about it. If you know the breed, you can easily look it up and find out that this particular breed is supposed to lay that color egg. Or perhaps you are trying to get an idea of when it will start laying. Some take a lot longer to lay eggs. Other things might be the fact that some birds handle cold weather or hot weather better than others. There really are a lot of reasons actually to find out what breed you have. I think after you know, you can better educate yourself on that breed simply by looking it up right here on BYC.
 
I think its worth knowing but really its up to you. Good points made by "nbenevento" above. Are your hatching/breeding or are the eggs just for food?
