Hi all,
I live on a small Australian Sub tropical Island in the South Pacific 5km x 8 km. Feral chickens are the norm and cows have right of way on the roads.
I have 3 ISA Browns (I think) which I’ve had from pullet age , nearly 2 years now and I also have 3 feral pullets I’ve rescued. Which are about the same age.
They are black/very dark brown and lay small white eggs which we prefer over the brown bigger ones. (I use those in my baking mostly). I had to seperate two of the feral chooks from the others because the ISA Browns bullied them something wicked.
My ISA Browns and one feral chook free range and my other two feral chooks have their own coop. All three feral chooks are skittish.
We recently had a visit from a feral rooster and now have two- 2 week old chicks which are in seperate rushly made coop with their mother. I’m thrilled by the way!!
We don’t have any predators (other than my daughters’ cat who we are babysitting while she is overseas)
We have an English Toy Terrier , he’s a rare breed, we brought him with us from New Zealand. His origins are from the ‘rat pit’ of Victorian England. We’ve trained him to leave the chickens alone, although he did lick his lips when he was close to the feral chicken when she was free range. I constantly monitor him just to be on the safe side.
I’ve visited BackYardChickens.com a few times over the years , surfing the net looking for answers.
My big problem is that I can’t go to the store to buy what I need like mainland folks, we have strict bio security to protect the island and don’t import vegetables or fruit except for potatoes and onions. If it doesn’t rain we don’t get water. Our soil is volcanic, high in iron ore but lacking in magnesium. It can be a very harsh environment in summer.
If the ship isn’t able to off load supplies then we have to wait till next month for it come, and we’re limited to what we can get. There are only stage 3 pellets available at the moment.
My drive in joining this community is to find out how to care for my baby chicks. Im thirsty for knowledge.
I’m not good with technology either, and don’t understand the jargon so much, you know tags and uploading files etc.
I’ve rambled on long enough.... Hi everyone!
