Newbie City Duck Owner!! Need advice!

Hi! I'm in the city as well, and My duck and two geese just hatched! I still have 2 more goose eggs in the bator, but they will be here in 2 to 3 days.

Can I join this thread?

Right now our babies are in my daughter's room. I bought 3 plastic bins and 3 heat lamps. Then I read how dangerous the heat lamps could be, so I decided to buy 3 of these instead. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HVM56Q/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's perfect and they run right under it! I also used this incubator, which was totally awesome! For someone having never hatched eggs before to have all of the eggs hatch that were in lockdown, I'm very happy! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303XAHO/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have 2 cats, and yes, they want to eat them! However, I brought the cats near their brooder, and brought the duckling out and held it for the cats to smell. Then, I set the duckling down with my hands close to it and it tried to go under my cat LOL My cat just sat there, not sure what to do. But my other cat was trying to jump into the brooder! So, we will guard them closely and have the cats sniff them daily, to get to know them.

I bought this to keep them indoors in when they get bigger... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ATBR5C/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's light weight and very easy to carry, and very portable. I like that it has a top! I will put puppy pads down in this and just throw them away daily.

Oh, speaking of bedding, I used pine shavings for the brooder and ended up throwing it out! The babies were trying to eat it! Also, it was getting all over their down and all over the floor. Someone recommended just putting a small towel down and washing it every day. So, I did that, and it works just fine! I might even just put paper towels and throw them away, saving me washing time!

I bought a 5' kiddy pool today for $9.99! We will let them swim out side in that, but tonight, they get their first swim in the bathtub LOL

Oh, and the reason I had to get 3 bins and 3 heating plates...... because I have 3 kids! I know better than to not make it even LOL They have each named their baby, the last 2 geese, my husband and I will name.

We are not planning on keeping the babies though, we will return them to the farm after their a little older. So, we will hatch, raise and return throughout the year. Our winters are so bad, we wouldn't have anywhere to let them play except indoors, so no duckies during the winter.

Right now, I have 1 Pekin duck, 1 Embden goose and 1 troulouse goose. The troulouse was a surprise as I was told I was only given Pekin and Embden!

I hope you don't mind if I join this thread, you all seem so nice and we are all kind of in the same boat!

Oh, I forgot to mention I bought diapers. We tried it on the duck today and he hated it of course. So, we took it off. But, I'm going to start putting it on them daily to get them used to it!

How is it sad? They will go outside everyday, with the safety of my home at night. They are fed top notch food and loved on, then off to the farm in about 2 months where children and people will adore them on the petting farm.

I don't make such comments about other people's decisions, if you have nothing nuce to say, please keep it to yourself.

I'm delighted to hear they will eventually get to live on a farm in a more normal environment. They need food, water, shelter, SPACE to roam free; they don't need to be "loved on" by humans.

Totally agree if ya can't say something nice you shouldn't say anything at all! Different people have different opinions, but I asked at the beginning of this post if ya don't have constructive, posts please keep it to yourself! Thanks Amanda for voicing it so well!

Hi Disney,

I have 1 Pekin duck and 1 Embden goose and 1 Toulouse goose. I have 2 more goose eggs due to hatch tomorrow or Tuesday. I am going to the farm tomorrow to pick up more free fertilized eggs, not sure what I'll grab!

Today was so fun! We took them on long walks twice today! They ate some grass, dandelions, ants and I think a few mosquitoes LOL Then we brought them in for their nightly bathtub swim and I cleaned their brooder for the 4th time today LOL I'm anal about them having a clean space to sleep and eat. I'm working on a fenced in area for them with a pool to play in during the day. I love them so much! They follow us everywhere and love to snuggle! It will be hard to send them back to the farm, but the children know it's what is best!

I'm just so lucky to have the opportunity to raise them and give them a good healthy start in life!
