Hi y'all,
So, I live in the city, and my yard is about a quarter acre..I have four chickens and I want to get two ducks. My concern is that they will be really loud and then I will get in trouble and possibly have to get rid of my chickens! These ducks would be kept at the very back of the yard, about 65-ish feet from my house, so about that same distance plus about twenty feet to the right of my neighbors. I called the feed store, the breeds they have are Pekins, Mallards, and Runners. Which of these breeds would be the quietest?
And when people say ducks are loud, what exactly does that mean? Louder than a rooster? Are male ducks or females louder?
My (chicken) hens are very quiet except for the occasional egg song, so I really don't want neighbors getting mad.
So please tell me honestly if, noise -wise, this is a bad idea.
THank you soo much.

Well, the femalr ducks basically HONK! The hens are very loud! I can hear mine all the way up at my driveway ( hundred yards away)

Out of thkse, I would say runners, cause I have heard mallards and pekins are EXTREMLY loud!, my runners are very quite.... Out of my welsh harlequins, anconas, and rouens, they are the quitest. Kinda skiddish though. Adorable though!

How many acres do you have? I would ask your neihbors if they mind first, I didnt know how loud ducks were when I got mine. Luckily my neihbors are sweet :clap

Also, if I can find muscovies, I hear they are very quiet?

Muscovies are, I understand, a fairly quiet breed of duck. They are larger, and can fly unless their wings are clipped. Their egg laying is more seasonal than other breeds, I have read. I said hello to a neighbor four doors down and around the corner (we have one acre lots in this neighborhood), and she said she hears my runner ducks sometimes.

yep muscovy are great in town, i have 10 adults and well over 20 ducklings and live in town and they basically don't make any noise, my four chooks are much louder. if you ever go to a poultry auction the mallards are quacking/honking away whilst the mussies just kick back and look around.

Another recommendation for Muscovy. They are quiet and they have nice personalities.

Drakes of all breeds are not loud, but seriously, do not get drakes and put them in with your chickens without a lot of ducks to go with the drakes.

The ducks of the mallard derived breeds murmur a lot, which isn't annoying, but occasionally they let out a really loud blast. It's like having a foghorn go off. Your neighbors will definitely hear it.
