One thing that can make a difference is your location. What someone in Alaska needs coop-wise can be quite different from your location in south TX. There are also differences in how people view their flocks...some think of their birds as farm animals and some see their birds as pets.
Once you sort out how you look at your flock and what your location demands, that will help you sort through what advice & opinions work best for you.
@RebelChief - Welcome to BYC!
So glad you've found us, and welcome to the flock, and don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any. Folks here are helpful and friendly for sure. Also, a big thanks to your husband for his military service- we wouldn't have our freedoms without those defending them. That being said, I want to add if you love gardening check out BYC's sister site called www.theeasygarden.com
Welcome!Yes! A ton of info here and people eager to help. This forum is quite amazing, really. Any question or
thought just use the search function. If you can’t find answer, create a new thread and ask.
I’d invest in a 22 ASAP to subside the problem before it gets worse and follow tips dawg53 suggested. Those coons will wipe out your flock quick! If you have raccoons, you most likely have skunks and possums too. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. And let’s not forget the neighbor dog! You need skirting and good closures on everything. Best of luck to you!
Oh yikes!! Or maybe a few traps? I used to enjoy seeing all of the wild animals... until I got chickensI have seen possums, in fact I had one stuck in a leaf can a couple days ago. I thought it was sick but it was playing possum. I'm in city limits so I don't know if I can shoot them. I will get a good pellet gun for sure.
