Well last night I got my intro done so today I'm going to vent. First of all, I live on a farm and I love animals as you can see by my signature, so I'm not being unrealistic! A neighbor(lets call him Sam)who lives a 1/4mile away has this Lab mix named Boo. Well Boo is a bad influence on my Lab Molly and meets up in the bushes and takes her places her Mommy doesn't want her to go. Seeing that Sam does business with my DH on occasion, I had the oppertunity 3 times over the course of this year to look him in the eye and say his dog is always on our place, on the road, on the golf course, and that he might want to rectify this. Nothing done...typical right!

. Well about 3 weeks ago we saw Boo leading 2 young Labs around and showing them the ropes. I told DH that the pups are going to bother the chickens cause they are pups right?! Well DH managed to corner one of these pups in the coop with the chikens petrified on their roosts. How DH kept the dog in and got the chicks out I dont understand but he did. One chicken missing. Wanda the SL Wyndotte. Not the favorite chicken but a good layer of pretty dark brown eggs. Piles of feathers all over but no bird. Feathers on the barbwire leading to Sam's house. Hmmm no-brainer! Called Sam and asked if he knew who owned the Lab pups with collars but no tags. He says,"Yeah, my neighbor and she is looking for them." I told him I had a chicken killer in my barn and I needed to talk to the owner. He said he would pick up the dog if I'd like. I told him that that wasn't needed and I would talk to the owner myself and deliver the dog as I needed payment for the dead chicken. His response was a dull/suprised "OH" Called the owner of the pup and told her I had the dog and I needed $20 bucks for the dead chicken and I will be right there.DH drove. Handed the dog over received check for 1-chicken on the memo:lol: and the woman said "Well that is a shame. We just started to let them run." "RUN"

Went to see Sam as my cellphone cut out on him and I didn't want him to think I hung up in a snit. Well he says"I'm not happy about this. Any time I see you, all you talk about is my dog being a bad infulence. My dog isn't bad, he is just being a dog." My response....."Yes he is being a dog, but not on your property on mine, on the road, on everyone elses property. I've told you about it numerous times because I thought you loved your animal. I see were I stand now and will take actions to protect my stock." Got in the car and DH drove home. Now DH is usually the softy and I'm the Cruella Deville. Not yesterday! He told me when we had the pup to go to Walmart, buy the gun that I have always said we needed and he always apposed, and shoot the pup. Had to inform him that aside from targets and skeet, I have never shot anything and this cute pup isn't going to be the first! He was also really mad at Sam and how he spoke to me and was thinking about severing business ties. I thanked him for defending my honor and all. Told him that I was confused as to why he was defending my honor this time as Sam really didn't say anything of importance...if anything he sounded like a little kid called on the carpet Then told him that he should be glad he is a man as "we" deal with this all the time. That's how the whole 'Don't get mad get even" thing started. ;)Anyhow, he was in a snit all night and at the breakfast table I was presented with copies of the KY state laws about protecting your poultry. So, I guess if Sam has to spend $$$$ getting shot taken out of his dog's butt at the vet, he may keep it at home! I haven't shot a gun since I was a kid...I wonder if I'm still as good a shot. I guess by vertue of owning chickens....we will find out won't we! Thanks for letting me vent! Comments and advice welcome! Anyone who has a young laying Speckled Sussex hen that you can sell me, let me know...have to replace a chicken now.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I have been there before and suffered the same pain and frustration. No animal control here but livestock do have the rights, the sheriff told to to talk to the owners and if nothing is resolved, I am within my rights to shoot the do. They call it SSS, shoot shovel and shut up.

I ended up taking the pups that were the offenders to a pound 40 miles away and adopting the Great Pry mother who has been a fantastiv LGD here.

"We just started to let them run."

WHAT?!?! Nobody has the right to let their dogs run at large all over the neighborhood. Maybe approach the town board to get the ball rolling on an ordinance to prohibit that. I'm not for making tons of new laws, but by gosh, that's just plain common sense to keep your dog under control. Wonder if they keep their kids at home or let them run...

That is the typical "city folk moving to the country" attitude about dogs. Country means no boundaries, no laws, to some, apparently. After those conversations you had, I'd not give any dog a second chance. Second chance may mean more dead birds.

BTW, welcome to BYC! We're like a huge family here.

Bringing the dog to the pound was what I intended to do if we couldn't find the owner. I had a pretty good idea were they came from and I know those pups didn't get that Wyn....Boo did. Thats why Sam 'didn't like this'...cause there were feathers in his dog's mouth but his neighbor paid for it! I also got to thinkin that the lady got off easy as the pound would have cost alot more to spring the dog and I could have kept it or sold it...it is a nice female! People are stupid. And this new thinking of "love me, love my dog" or "love me, love my kid" is the root of most problems in society now. If this was all reversed and it was my Lab Molly, I would have been apologizing all over the place and would not have had to be asked to write a check...it would have been done already! Now my poor dogs are on lock down because I cant run the risk of "People in glass houses" OH...I forgot...the best part was when Sam said that I should have built a more secure set up to keep coyotes and raccoons out! I have! It is Ft Knox...pardon the KY pun. My dogs arent eating my chickens. As I said I have a Lab and another dog who loves chicken and the only time she ever went into the garbage was for chicken bones, and they haven't done anything. In fact they usually bark and chase Boo away resently since the chicks have gotton big and moved to the coop come to think about it!
I like the SSS bit and I hope I dont have to but I will...and Sam knows it!

I remember hearing about SSS when I lived in Montana. LOL Seeing as it is a puppy, I might be more inclined to pick him up and drop him off at the nearest animal shelter w/the owner's info. Either he will pay a fine and get the dog back or the dog will get adopted out. Either way you win and don't have puppy blood on your hands.

You have city ordinance and county ordinance. The county is more lax (sp.)because of the nature of farming. Good thing as my Molly and Matty can dissappear from me pretty quick. The difference is I find them immediatly whether I have to start up the truck or saddle up the horse! KY state statue say I can shoot so there you have it.
As I said, I don't think this will be a problem anymore. The reason Sam got ticked is that he has figured out I don't threaten and I inferred what will happen in the future. My older brother says it is they way I say things....very direct...the right action words/buzz words that intimidate...I think it is hilarious cause I'm just 5'2" with my shoes on!

My husband says he knows not to mess with me and"You can be very mean when you want to be honey" I wish I could type here what my nickname is that the other neighbor farmer calls me. Administration will get mad....and I'm new here!

Surfice to say, the name indicates fear and respect!

If you shoot, shoot to kill. It might be nice to think about the owner learning a lesson because of a vet bill, but in most places it is considered cruelty to animals to shoot to wound. Most jurisdictions allow you to shoot to kill a marauding dog, but shooting to wound, shooting with a paintball gun (if it leaves bruises or soreness), pellet guns, etc. will get you into trouble.

Well, it sounds like you handled it exactly how you should have. Sorry about your loss.

Oh, and

We live in the country and our animal control makes you keep dogs on your own property.....guess some are more lax than others.
