I have Rhode island red and gold laced wyandotte hens and a silver laced roo. The reds lay slightly larger eggs but I like the temperament of the wyandotte better although they are hard to find at TSC. You can get them in a variety of colorations. I have been getting an egg a day from all of my hens even though the winter.
I'd spend some time in the Breeds section, and try to decide what you want from birds - eggs, meat, both, looks, etc. There is no one perfect breed, and it may depend on what you can find locally as well.
