The Quack Shack

@WannaBeHillBilly Yeah, trash-pandas were really bad this year. They TORE into one of the duck coops (metal shed!) and got my three Calls. :( The full-sized Magpie drake that was in there was barely touched...

They also got into my Brahma pen and left me with only three (two roos, of course).

I miss all my critters. :(

That horde of bandits started to dig into the duck-run but fortunately stinky sardines and the coni-bear put an end to that quickly.

How has your situation developed? - You still have some critters...

I'm currently living in my ex-husband's basement. :P Which is fine, since he's still my best friend. Going to be looking for a place with my son in late winter, somewhere that has a garage so I can keep my rabbits in there.

Another friend is boarding most of my rabbits for the time being. I have three adult ones with me here, and fourteen babies. Working on selling most of the kits.

I also have one of my original OEGB hens, the only one that was left. She's an old girl and is inside with me, in a large cage.

And of course I still have my three cats and my dog.

So yes, I still have *some* critters. But I miss going out and taking care of all the chores with coops full of chickens and ducks, and all my herd of rabbits. But not in the winter!!!

I hope you can find a new place where you can have some more bird flocks!

Today our little weird Welshie boy was found dead in the middle of the large duck house. There was no blood and no indication yesterday that this could happen.

He was 5 months old and very strange - he remained small, was never fully feathered (areas with down remained) and those feathers that he did have were kinda random in placement in size. He looked all the time as though he just escaped from a fox's mouth.

We told the egg seller about this after the first two months when it became obvious as we were worried about genetic defects. He insisted that it must be some kind of internal parasites inhibiting the duckling's growth. But then he did also insist that he sold us 2 boxes of Welshie eggs and not 1 box of Welshies and 1 box of Silver Appleyards which turned out to very obviously be the case.

We're sad about the little guy and concerned what this means going forward - do we try and hatch our own Welshies or will this bring even more strange and short-lived animals.

No good answers right now.
