Hi, everyone!
My family and I are new owners to 4 awesome hens andd from my understanding they are
1 Buff Orpington - Sally
3 Rhode Island Reds - Savage, Seleste & Sky
We originally started with just 2 Orpingtons that were given to us by our neighbor. Unfortunately, I had not properly researched everything that went into raising hens and we lost one Orpington, from what I now believe, to her being egg bound.
After she passed her 'sister' was inevitably so sad, it was heartbreaking. We went to our local feed store, picked up our 3 RIR and they get on great together, for the most part.
After we got everyone situated, we realized the feed store had given us one that was missing an eye. I was afraid if I brought her back they'd kill her, so my husband and I dove head first into rehabilitating this very sick hen. She was touch and go for several days, but happy to say after 10 days of antibiotics, hand feeding food and water and lots and lots of cuddles she is perfect! Well, imperfectly perfect but hey, she's a fighter and we love her!
I read through a bunch of threads on this site, which has helped tremendously through the loss of our Orpington and the process of helping our 1 eyed chicken get better.
So, thanks already for the informatiin and I am looking forward to being more educated and having happy healthy hens!
