Newbie here!

Oh definitely go make a plea to the city! Many folks all over the country have been able to implement a change in city ordinances which will allow a limited amount of hens even on a small lot in residential neighborhoods. Good luck!

You may not be able to tell the sex of your chicks until about 12-16 weeks, though you could try posting some more photos here:

Most people who own less than an acre of property can own up to 6 chickens and 0 being Roos. Roos typically in small suburban areas violate noise ordinances and are not needed for eggs. They also have a habit of causing unplanned chicken math. Local planning commission’s tend to be in charge and are the ones to contact in your area for laws and ordinances. Check for an application or permit to see if you are able to own fowl and what the laws are. Structure for housing typically at least 20 ft off property line so not near roads or neighbors. Only permitted in back yards not front etc. Usually require removal of care items once no longer own birds within 90 days or what is dictated in your area. These are examples of other cities laws and ordinances. I only had to do an application but I may update my housing for them to a shed and a shed or build your own coop requires a permit here with fee of $97. My prefabricated coop did not have a fee attached. Good Luck!
