The first part of recovery is recognizing you have a problem.
A 12 step program is based on 12 simple steps. The CA (Chicken Addicts) 12 steps are as follows:
1.We admit we were powerless over chickens that our lives had become unmanageable because all we do is think about chickens.
2.We believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity, but we are usually wrong. Chickens are brainwashing us.
3.We make a decision to turn our lives over to a higher power, and he has a beard and a beak and really pretty hackle feathers.
4. We make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, but after we search the coop, pen and surrounding territory for eggs.
5. We admit to a higher power, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Yes, I love chickens. I take on too many. I need more to survive.
6.Were entirely ready to have a higher power and remove all these defects of character. Unfortunately, my higher power loves chickens, too. He doesn't really see my problem as a defect. My husband questions this.
7. Humbly asked the higher power to remove our shortcomings. Somehow, this chicken addiction falls low on his list.
8. Make a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all (by giving them fresh chicken eggs).
9. Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others (do not give store-bought eggs or accidently shoot them when aiming for their ferocious chicken-killer dog).
10.Continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it (My name is Jen, I have 20 chickens today, tomorrow maybe 23, the next day 28 - I am admitting it... I am doing well.).
11.Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with the higher power as we understood him/her, praying only for knowledge and will for us and the power to carry that out. I pray for no roosters (this counts, right?)
12.Have a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we try to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs (hence BYC).
The steps require that you be accountable for your behavior while you were collecting chickens and admit the harm you may have done to others by not providing them enough fresh eggs and be willing to make amends by collecting more chickens to share fresh eggs with the world.. You must continue to accept responsibility for your behavior and to promptly admit it when you are wrong. By taking responsibility for your behavior, you can begin to gain control over your life again. Admit faults here on BYC and be comforted you are on the right path.
ETA: I was in the other room and came in to find 3 of my hens jumping on my keyboard tray furiously and see they have learned to type.
