I am in Willis, Texas. I have a husband and 3 sons, who I homeschool. Yes I homeschool my husband too, someone has to train him. Just kidding, he is perfection and can do anything and build anything he sees. We have 8 chicks, parakeets, a leopard gecko, a Yorkie who thinks she is human and a Great Pyrenees who thinks she's a Yorkie.
I think one of the chicks is a rooster, it comb is twice the size of the rest but what do I know. We are on about 3 acres so the chickens will be mostly free range but we will still have a coop for at night. There are a lot of nasty bobcats and raccoons and snakes and anything else you can imagine to come attack my sweet baby girls (and pos. boy). I am completely new to having chickens. I visited my grandparents who had them and helped out as a kid and loved it. So I hope to give that to my kids.
I cant wait to learn from everyone here cuz this is all new to me. Any first time advice would be great.

Welcome to BYC!

You might want to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry, including a section on keeping your birds safe from predators...

Welcome, neighbor! I live just south of Willis off of Willis-Waukegan Rd!

This is an amazing place, with an inexhaustible wealth of information. If you need to know something, chances are it's been posted here. And if not, you can ask, and get an answer fast!

Have fun with your chicks! I just started getting eggs a few weeks ago; chickens are never dull!

Howdy Melly!! We're not too far from you, about 25 minutes west on 1375 & 149!! I stay home with our 10mo son who I plan on homeschooling when the time comes. Would love to get together with you on what you use for that since I'm still researching it. ;) Anywho, we will be over 100 birds in May (~80 right now) that we raise for eggs & meat. Would be happy to help you out with whatever you need :)

I would love to help you out with any homeschool questions and you can teach me all about chickens. Our little chicks are getting big. Their feathers are coming in and they are not looking quite as cute. My boys looked at them this morning and my 8 year old says, "This must be their awkward phase." I died laughing. Anyway, it's nice to hear from a neighbor. : )

Hi, found your post while researching about a new bird problem! I live outside of Conroe, close to Willis. Love chicken talk, animal talk in general, I have four kids (one boy, three girls)! Looking for others closer to my area in case I want to do chicken swaps, need help, and expand my social circle. BYC is amazing!
