Newbie/Lost all our chickens today MD

Hi. My name is Kris. I had 19 chickens of this morning. We've had them since Feb. 2007.
My FIL and DH have had chickens off and on all their lives.

My FIL went out to our fenced in chicken coop, went in to the chicken house and
all our chickens were dead in the chicken house.
We had 19 chickens. We feed them a bag feed from Southern States. I give them
scraps of food - like lettuce, grapes, celery, potato peelings, appple peelings
etc.
They do not look like they died a violent death. I know we had hawks in the
area. They were molting and looked terrible.
A friend took a chicken down to animal control for us. I am just not sure what
to think. In the last three years, we have lost a chicke here and there. We lost
two in two days in July...we thought it was the heat wave.
Any ideas?

Next question is ....when we are ready any suggestions of where to get chickens?
We mail ordered before and got 25 chickens but I think that was too many. I am in Maryland.

Anyway you can get that bag of feed tested? Sounds like bad feed, or poisoning for that many to die so quickly and unexpectedly. So sorry for your losses.

I had turkeys die resently do to the feed.

And who knows? If it IS the feed, maybe the manufacturer will replace your chickens!

oh, wow... how heartbreaking for you, and tragic for them.

It does sound like poisoning for it to have hit them all at the same time. I hope you find the answers you need.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't think the potato peelings were the culprit but chickens can't digest them I have learned.
