Newbie needs help! My sweet little roo is going nuts!

This is my Red Devil. He liked to bite and attack everyone and everything. Poor boy has to be cooped by himself. He is almost a year and a half now. He is quite special though. I take him out in the pasture away from the other chickens and he will walk with me ( and my cats and dogs). he comes to me like a dog. Most of the time now he is very friendly to me. I can even pick him up and hold him. He has a bad day now and then when he tries to bite me when I feed him. And I still can't let him out with the rest of the chickens because he tries to fight every rooster and is very vicious at it.
I hope you have good luck with your little Roo!

Thanks for the help guys! It has really made me more confident with Guy. P.S Red Devil is very handsome and I love the name! It really matches his personality.

hey I was thinking about you, maybe your roo is just roughhousing and has taken it too far. I have a boy dog and his favorite things to do is wrestle, bite, and play fight. it does get old and we say "gentle!" and he changes his bites to licks, but of course you cannot say gentle to a chicken.

Well, I could certainly try. BTW, about your dog. Maybe you would consider getting him neutered (if he isn't already). I have heard it really improves their disposition, and they live longer. He's a cute dog by the way.

he has been neutered for over a year, was neutered at 5 months old. I have a cat too. 16 years old never had kittens why because she was neutered. ooh.

neutering at an older age usuualldoesnt help too much; its mostly also learned behavior; once they've learned to be male, they stay that way... it just tones down the hormonal PUSH a bit... and no, htere is no such thing as an animal being playful. when it is being agressive. there is a big difference between a male like my dog that play bites and growls with hubby but if u say ' STOP PLAY', he stops, and he never breaks skin, and he only does it when he is 'asked' to PLAY ROUGH *actually hubby speaks to him in thai, but the idea is the same. the dog gets 'invited' to play box and grapple and grab. and only with hubby, and stops on command. and he is neutered.

an aggressive rooster is just that. an agressive rooster. because he is a rooster. there are mellower roosters and less mellow roosters, just like people. but, althoiugh u cant get rid of a person, u an change an animal or get rid of him/her. excusing behavior as 'play' ends up with someone, usually a person /child, injured (or law suit== but officer, he was just trying to play while a big dog latches on to a small child.)

and agressive play in dogs is not gender oriented... there are some females that are much more 'mouthy' then some males (friend's saluki is one, very very mouthy and has yet to learn her strenght, so she is not allowed to mouth anyone but her owner)....

and yes, u can train chickens, just depends on what .... my thai chicken babies are learning not to rush me when i come in to their greenhouse to feed them. i hate when animasl rush me for feeding. when they rush me, they dont get food, as they turn their backs on me and rush back towards their feeder, i throw some veggies there as reward, im thinking of using a bell so that they learn that when we ring a bell, they run to their feed dish. hubby trains them to stand up in their game cock stance when he snaps his fingers at them; they all stand up tall. when he says coococococ, they run after him. its all conditioning. check up n the internet all the things u can train chickens (shape behaviors) to do.

depends on the breed, size and sexual maturity of the animal. if he's managed to breed abitch (which i doubt) then yes, its already a learned behavior, but usually its an ok age; but the play fighting biting is also a learned behavior, tis one that you allow to develop or prevent ... most people are more lenient with smaller breeds becasue tis less threatening, to have a large dog mouth you and bite is more serious. that is why
, in general many small/toy dogs have 'personality' problems. they just get a way with more **** then a large dog could. like a 'cute' child gets more spoiled then a less cute child jsut because people are instinctively biased... you have to decide if u like the behavior, if it suits u or not... and if not, its never too late to try to remedy the sitauoation but just calls for much more work and patience and not always 100% unless u are a dog master of training, and even then its never 100% dont be fooled by any trainer/;anial behaviorist, animals are just that, changeable, flexible, dynamic, and every situation can change and influence behaviors, from past and present just like people in different environments. howver hormones , i.e. biolgy also influences the actions, not just the environment therefore neutering, etc.

I had my male dog neutered at 2 years old. That's when he decided to try and be a big boy. Haven't had any issues since and he is 8 now. I also don't play fight though. I am caretaker and disciplinarian, hubby plays. :)
