Newbie Quail Questions

Yes, Coturnix are awesome. I have many colors including Silver, Albino, Brown, White, Tuxedo and Gold. I am overflowing with eggs!

And if you are not interested in hatching eggs, it's fine to have all females with coturnix (not sure about bobs). They will still lay eggs, and they will stay prettier since they lose feathers and get tatty when they are mated. There is also a smaller chance of aggression and fighting if you don't have any males.

All female is fine with the Bobwhites, but you need a good ratio of them, too many males and not enough females is an issue, but once the Bobwhites find their mate, they are paired for life "Until Death Do We Part" like a family. That is, however, one of my favorite things about them, they choose their mate and stick together. The males help the females in all the egg chores too, as they will both brood the eggs and take turns. I find them quite romantic actually. I think it is sweet!!

Buttons are wonderful! (in my opinion) but they are flighty, (even when handled since day 1till a 365... they still hate me lol) and they are not outdoor pets. I would suggest coturnix as the are easy for newbies.

Well, If I got bobs, can I release them on our property? We got quite a few bobs around that are wild.

You need to check with your state's regulations (Department of Wildlife or Fish and Game).Some states do not allow releasing domestic stock into the wild. Also some states require a permit to raise Bobwhites. Best to check it out first, fines can be pretty hefty.

Also what feed do you all use when they are adults?

Not real sure what your asking in the 1st question. Number 2, I feed my quail and my pheasants 24% protein feed from hatch to death.

Can quail be kept in electric fencing? Or can only certain types be kept in electric fencing? Sorry if that wasn't clear before. Can they get hurt by electric fencing?
