Hello. I have 3 eggs under my broody Australorp. We're on day 22 without so much as a pip. I candled at day 14, and they looked good. I've heard you shouldn't candle any later than that. She'll sit on the eggs until she sees me, then she paces in her pen. How much longer should I give her?

Another two days. I’ve had eggs hatch two full days early under a broody, some people have had them hatch a few days late. Consider that 21 day thing a target, just something that will be close.

Are you counting the days right? That is a really common mistake. An egg does not have a full day’s worth of development two seconds or two hours after it starts incubation. When you are counting days you say “one” 24 hours after you start. An easy way to check is that the day of the week they start is when the 21 days are up. If they started on a Saturday, that 21 days is up on a Saturday.

    Good luck!

Thank you. That would make today day #22. I'll give her a couple more days to see what happens. Fingers crossed!

If other hens were adding eggs to her nest, you have may staggered hatches.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I hope that the hatch is successful, but its a little strange that she gets off the nest and paces around in your presence - never had that experience myself.

    Best wishes
