I got my second egg today!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH baby! My question is this.....Are there signs/ behaviors right before they start laying the eggs?

I found an egg yesterday, but it looked like it had been there for a day or two. I went out this morning..looked in the nesting boxes....and nothing. BUT< when I looked over in the corner of the coop, sitting on a patch of grass was this cute little egg waiting for me.

Can I train them to use the nesting boxes?

Do they lay at certain times of the day?

I am really excited about my eggs. Now if I only had a pig for some bacon.......

You can put rubber 'joke' eggs in the nest box, golf balls or round stones in there to try and show them where to lay their eggs. We had to do this with one of our girls when she was younger and she picked it up real fast.

Mine caught me by surprise. I saw one of my leghorns laying in a potted plant and when I moved her, she was sitting on 2 little eggs! I made a makeshift nest out of some cat litter boxes, put 2 of my ceramic fake eggs in it and they started using that with only one mistake so far. You need to put fake eggs or golf balls in the nest so they know what it is.

Congrats! My husband had 3 little eggs yesterday for breakfast, they are so cute!

Mine have just started but have been moving up their time from afternoon to early morning. I think it will vary by bird.

Even with fake eggs and golf balls in the nest, it still took my BO a week to get to laying in the boxes. I think the first one surprised her. She now lays in the box everytime. (she has a favorite box and will only lay in that one)
