Woke up to a peeping Wellie chick in the incubator. Just about had to duct-tape my hands behind my back to keep myself from opening the incubator. Maybe the chick will convince the other 6 eggs to pip and zip today. Today is day 21 for my 7 Wellie eggs. They're too dark to candle so I don't know what I've got in there.
I'm so, so glad to actually have a chick hatch. Thought I would be the zero on the board.
Whew...
So dance the chicken dance for me, my BYC friends, because YIPPEE!

Congrats NewChickMom and my1stchicks!

Today is day 19. My biggest hardship is keeping my ear off the bator glass. Everytime I walk by the bator, I put my ear down listening for peeps now.

Well, our hatch is over. We have 18 little chicks! There were 23 eggs, 3 were clear, two did not hatch. Do I figure my percentage on the viable eggs, or on all the eggs I started with?

Yay! Thanks for the math. I'm sure you've had to explain that before in this thread. I was too lazy to look through all the posts.

Well, I'm calling the hatch over. It's day 23. There are 9 eggs in the bator out of 29 that did not hatch. It's too quiet in there. I feel like if they were going to hatch, I would see or hear life in them but I don't, so I'm going to call it. I had 1 blood ring when I culled eggs at day 11 and 12 that were clear. I verified non fertility when I opened them after culling. The remaining 29 out of original 42 appeared to have been deveoping, even though 3 had air sacs that ran down the sides and 1 that looks like the air sac was on the wrong end altogether. I suspect this is a problem that is charcteristic of shipped eggs. If I deduct the blood ring, the final tally is 20 chicks from 30 eggs, so my hatch percentage is 67%. I plan to open these eggs later to see at what stage they actually quit on me! I'm sure I'll post the results.

I have you updated. I know that quiet feeling on day 23. My buff silkies were there. Ugh. I opened them all up and had fully formed yet dead chicks. Don' t know what I did wrong. The one that did pip, Rocky, I helped him out of the shell and he died anyway. I'm never going to "help" again. Mother Nature knows best.
Congratulations on a big hatch of 20 new chicks!
