We live in the city, far from country life but were blessed with a huge back yard. We have a pond about 13 koi, 3 dogs, a squirrel (who loves to steal birdfood) and tons of wild birds. We have been talking about getting chickens and haven't made the plunge till Sat. night!
One day we were watching tv and there it was, a silkie, cute as can be, a must have. So we started to research Silkies. I brought up the idea to my daughter in conversation and told her we are looking at chickens, mainly silkies to begin with. Being the wonderful teenager that she is, she rolled her eyes and went into her room. The next day out of the blue she said lets get a silkie. So between movie night and baking cupcakes, we managed to find someone kind enough to let us buy 2 silkies at 8pm on a Saturday night.
Crazy! Jumped in feet first and now we are looking at buying a couple of regular hens (of course we need to build a coop first) but none-the-less we are proud owners of 2 silkies. Welcome to then new urban farming! Super excited that I found this website & get to talk to some amazing people and get some awesome ideas! Im even more excited to move the chicks out of the guest bedroom and to a real fancy, sturdy, racoon proof coop.
Cant wait for regular fresh eggs, now if I can convince my family on getting a pig? Is there a forum for that ?
