I have a small flock of mottled javas that are now 20 weeks. the hens are separated from the cocks and are now laying. at what age should I slaughter the cocks. I know this breed matures slowly but I am worried if I wait any longer they will be tough and only good for stewing. Do I go by their weight or their age to decide when to slaughter them?
thanx in advance.

We've raised Mottle Javas for a decade now. We always eat the cockerels between 16 and 24 weeks. If they are just learning to crow you are alright; on the other hand, once they have the crowing thing down then you are about too late.
