Newly hatched keet (had to help it out due to dry membrane) appears to have some kind of bulge on its neck (right side). Any clues what that could be? Also, if a keet hatches and is deformed to the point it can’t survive, what is the most humane way of dispatching them at that age/size?

Is it a bulge or is it a bent (wry) neck?

Decapitation is quick. You could do it with a pair of shears or scissors.

Definitely a lump of some kind. I wondered at first if it was the crop full of yolk and maybe I helped it hatch too soon and it hadn’t finished all the yoke?

Definitely not a crop full of yolk. The yolk gets absorbed through the abdomen.

Personally I would have culled it immediately.
