Newly retired RN and looking to enjoy raising chickens.

What’s something you wish you had known when you started?
That chickens can't thrive off free-ranging alone. They need to have daily access to formulated feed.
There are a few exceptions, like in Hawaii where the bio culture is very rich and diverse so feral chickens can thrive there.
I got chickens after I started reading a blog where the lady literally didn't feed her chickens for 9 months out of the year. She lived in Kentucky so had mild winters, but there's no way her chickens did as well as they could. Sure, they survived, but I had watched a couple videos from her where the chickens were frantically following her around and I realized after having my own birds for a few months that hers must have been starving to follow her around with that kind of frenzied devotion.

Thank you! What’s something you wish you had known when starting out!
Maybe start with 4 chickens, not 6. Yet we're good. I heard about "chicken math" and I can see why it can get out of hand. If I do this ladies right, I'll be a good "chicken tender"!
