What’s something you wish you had known when you started?
That chickens can't thrive off free-ranging alone. They need to have daily access to formulated feed.
There are a few exceptions, like in Hawaii where the bio culture is very rich and diverse so feral chickens can thrive there.
I got chickens after I started reading a blog where the lady literally didn't feed her chickens for 9 months out of the year. She lived in Kentucky so had mild winters, but there's no way her chickens did as well as they could. Sure, they survived, but I had watched a couple videos from her where the chickens were frantically following her around and I realized after having my own birds for a few months that hers must have been starving to follow her around with that kind of frenzied devotion.
