All right, so next year we're thinking of getting just a few chicks, from My Pet Chicken. Yeah, it's early, but I just figured 'Why not?'
So far we're pondering 2 of the Bantam Assortment, a Buff Orpington, Light Brown Leghorn, and either a Speckled Sussex or a Salmon Faverolles. All hens, this time. What do you guys think about these breeds? And how do you think the bantams would do with the others?

I'm new to chickens but have to say that my 5 came from MPC, and my BO Ruby is my absolute favorite. She is affectionate, curious, smart and so sweet. I wish I'd ordered 5 Buff Orpingtons!

Leghorns are supposed to be super flighty, and I know nothing about BOs since I've never owned any. I can tell you that the Speckled Sussex are amazing chickens though! Mine are so sweet, when I sit down in the coop, my Speckled Sussex, Besty and Specks, are the first to jump in my lap. As for keeping the bantams and the standards together, I've done it before with no problems.

Sounds good. I have bantams and standards together no problem. As for leghorns, they are super flighty if you don't give them enough attention. I thought all mine were crazy, then sold just two chicks to another person, and they didn't think they were crazy at all! Shows what happens when you raise 25 rather than just two! Plus... I think their two kids handled them till they were soft!

Well, I've never heard anything about a Buff Orp, and even my younger brother-who-never-gets-excited-about-anything even wants one.

I really like the way leghorns look, but I don't really want a flighty bird. So maybe we'll get 2 Bantams, a BO, a Speckled Sussex, and a Salmon Fav.?

Thanks for the input.

I have 5 Salmon Fav's and I thought they were going to be the most gentle and loving breed of the bunch that I ordered. In turn, they are skittish, weary, flighty and aloof. They will peck the heck out of me everytime I attempt to pick them up to handle them. I don't know if this is normal or if I just got 5 that are different. I don't want you to not order them them just because I may have had a bad bunch. Maybe someone else with more experience with the SF can tell you more definitively what their temperment is like.

i really really really want a blue laced red wyandotte. i'm borderline obsessed with finding a couple...

we are actually going to get 4 more grown hens now since 4 out of 7 of our saved chicks turned out to be roos!

Orpingtons. Definately. I've GOT to get some calmer, quieter, friendlier birds. I'd love a few Buffs and Blues......maybe by the time I can get this bator figured out Suede's girls will be in full production?
