NJ - Sussex County Poultry Fanciers Annual Fall Show!!!

I need help....so this is my first time entering my girls in a show. What do I expect? Do I need to provide the cage(s) that my girls will be housed in during the show? Will I be able to drop off close to the entrance during coop up or should I bring a wagon (lol, but serious) to bring them into the show area? I really don't know what to do/expect when I get there so I am looking for some info for a first timer. ANY, even if u think its nothing, ANY help will be soooo appreciated. My daughters are so excited and I really can't wait.

Thanks to anyone for any information they can provide!

Sue

Sue, the cages will already be set up when you get there. If you're lucky, there will be parking close enough to unload your birds, then move your car to the parking lot. You check in at the desk, coop in, put on the finishing touches, and have a ball at the fairgrounds.
Hope you wear comfortable shoes!
And don't forget your camera, and money for the vendors, chinese auction and raffles.
Food and water will be available there.

If you are selling the light brown leghorns, I am interested.

jerseygirl1.......

Yes, I can bring some brown leghorns for you. You can look at them and decide for sure then. They are George Beyer's line (form NY). I have a few pullets that are good to go...the cockerels still have a bit of filling out to do as far as their tails go. I only have one cockerel that's ready, and he's in the show, haha. My email is [email protected]. Send me a message of what you might be interested in, and we can go from there.

Wow - sorry new people! I've been busting my butt on school work this week, and have not been getting my notifications in my email from this thread.

Sue, "stoopid" (no offense, I feel weird calling you that) is correct, only bring water cups if you have them - the small cups provided fall a lot, or run out of water. Also, I bring my own chicken food, although there is people food there. Sometimes there is not enough chicken food, if we miss our donation from the feed store. Not often, but it happens.

When you get there, leave the birds in the car while you go to the show desk to pick up your exhibitor number, then scan the hall to locate your cages, THEN get your birds - it's much easier that way, believe me! (Ask me how I know this) As far as transporting them in, it all depends on how close you can get to the barn. I have some pretty big birds, so it's just easier to carry them in in my arms, even though I have to make trips.

Once they're all settled, you're free for the rest of the day. Make sure to buy some tickets for the auction, and check out the sale cages. Ask LOTS of questions - there's no better opportunity than this for chicken questions. Just remember, we all asked what you're going to at one time - there are no dumb questions! It's dumb NOT to ask them.

Find me people! I'll have my red Faverolles sweatshirt on, running around like a chicken with her....well, you get the picture! see you there!!

Hi everyone I don't post much anymore since my new baby but I'm looking for some pullets of any egg laying breed. Right now I have a crew of brown leghorns that are 3 years old and I'm not getting enough eggs even with with lights going on early! I'll be at the show today. text me at 973-997-0277. Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies and help. We went to the show today and had a great time. I honestly didn't know that there were soooo many varieties of chickens, ducks, etc. Great learning experience. If anyone can post who was the Grand Champion from today I would really appreciate it. We left about 2:00pm and had to miss the final stuff. Our Black Australorp, Timmy, came in 5th for the Pullets. Will definitely do this again. Hope you all had a great time.

Had a great time at the Sussex County show! There are some amazing varieties of birds out there ... and some chickens the size of a golden retriever! (They ain't kidding when they say Jersey Giants!) It was great to meet some folks from here, including fellow LI-er Roberta.

I was happy to have picked up some new additions to the flock ... a pair of barred Plymouth Rock chicks:

The seller said they are about 8 weeks old, and he was fairly certain they are both hens ... guess I'll find out soon enough! Even though they have nearly all of their feathers, they still have some of their chick fuzz, and they are much smaller than my Japanese Bantams, so I'm going to keep them separated for another couple of weeks. Once they've gotten significantly bigger and sturdier, I'll introduce them to the flock.

I looked for the old guy, didn't see anyone that matched your description.... Were you there?

Won't know 'till I get there. I'm an old guy with a gray beard. The only judge there with that description.

I might be interested in your Cornish.
