NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! please help

First of all, we want egg layers not meat birds. And i have already said that the place we are trying to get him to, might not take him.

What do you mean by "worried about something that is not happening?"

Don't worry I had an unexpected roo and although he is noisy, terrified of birds and hates long purple dresses, he is my pride and joy! Roos are brilliant and keep the girls in check, stop rival pecking and protect from predators (to a certain extent!!)
Just keep lots of cantact with your roo, like trying to tame him, it makes life a hell of a lot easier and you more sane!

Otherwise enjoy him!! ;)

thanks, but every time we try to pick him up he pecks us, violently. i am starting to see the up side as more people reply, though. any ideas on how to "tame him."

You said you were worried as you knew a friend who had a rooster that regularly beat up her hens.

A rooster will never be an egg layer.

If that place will not take him, and you don't want him.........what will you do?

Seems to me you either find a new place to take him, or you will have to cull him. Rather than just throw it in the trash......you could have a delicious roast chicken.

Again not meat birds, and i meant that i wanted egglayers because we will NOT kill our animals for ourselves. we will have to keep him if they dont take him, that is exactly why i made this thread, because i have questions if we have to keep him.... we ARE up for the challenge.

I said i am worried that Henry WILL be like that, even if he isnt now.

He may or he may not. Many, many young, inexperienced roosters are rough and uncoordinated, at first! But as they mature they figure things out and settle down. Although watching even a good roo accomplish the deed may seem rough, that's just the way chickens are.
You just have to give him time to mature and watch him. My rooster was about a year old before he settled in to being a good rooster with not quite so much raging teenage hormone issues!

As far as taming him? Good luck. I've never attempted to tame a rooster. I work with them a lot as they are growing up so they know I expect them to stay out of my space. The young ones generally give it shot at going after me a few times, just to test it out, but I chase them right back and they eventually learn to be respectful. That's about all I ask of my roosters. I handle them only when necessary, usually getting him off the roost at night if I need to deworm or whatever. Otherwise I just let them be and let them do their job.

OK. To me it seems a bit crazy that you will go and buy a chicken to eat (probably from a supermarket and that has had a less than ideal life) but you will not make use of a chicken that you don't really want. But I can understand that you might not like to actually kill the chicken yourself when you can let others do it for you so you won't feel guilty.

That rooster might be aggressive.....it might not.....it might attack you......if might be frightened of you......it might escape, it might get killed by a dog.......it might die of a disease.........so so many things MIGHT happen. Why worry yourself about things that are not happening?

You don't need to 'tame him'. You are thinking about things way too much. Just treat him like the rest of your chickens. If you treat the chickens like chickens then they will act like chickens. If you are cuddling them, picking them up, stroking them and talking to them like they are kittens or puppies, then you might get some problems. This is because the birds will loose all natural fear of you and they will not respect you as the boss.

This is dangerous in the roosters case. If you then annoy him or make him feel you are a threat he will have no hesitation to attack you. You can not reason with it, or show it love so it will love you back.

When you go into the run, if he comes too close to you, or tries to peck you shoes, you should scare him away, push him away with you foot or a broom. Show him you are in charge. Never kick him or hit him. That is what some people recommend, but that is animal abuse.

I think you need to re home you rooster as you sound not very confident about having him, and I think that you won't really enjoy the experience from you comments. I guess you birds will be pets (like mine are) and you can get the added bonus of some fresh eggs. If this is the case I would sure re home the rooster.

No reason not to keep him, unless not zoned for roosters. I guess at one point or another we all had our first rooster right? We all had to learn about roosters and how to handle them, no different for the OP. At least this forum is a really good place to come to figure things out and get lots of great info!

I would still feel guilty because i would be sending it to its doom.

I am simply planning ahead. it is better to be ready for these problems if they come, than cross my fingers and hope for the best. If he does become aggressive i want to know what to do. i am simply thinking. Things always might happen, and i will be ready for them. I am not a worrier i am simply smart.

the reason i mentioned taming him is because some one else mentioned it.
