no chickens yet

Welcome to BYC!

I agree with the try free range time with supervision. I do that with my chickens - because I worry about hawks and such - and one of our cats comes out all the time, and another occasionally.

The cats were able to see into the brooder when the chicks were little and inside, and knew they were ours, and never have threatened any chicken. YMMV, can't guarantee that'd be true for yours. At this point, our head pullet chases Tybalt-the-cat on a regular basis - she'll go jump up on a chair he's on just to go out of her way to chase him, and he runs. When nobody's hassling him, sometimes he likes to go curl up in a nest box. I was joking today that the coop is the harim and he is the eunuch guard.
