No crow rooster collar death beware

RIP Rooster. We just had the exact same thing happen to our gorgeous White Australorp rooster. Collar on loosely for a week, firmer for two weeks then this morning foaming at the mouth and dead without warning. We’re devastated and in tears he was my favourite and our only rooster. Beware collars!
So sorry for your loss :hugs

Thank you for stepping up and posting your experience. So many people think these are the answer to their prayers and so many more encourage others to use them also.
They aren't very effective and they do cause harm or death in many instances. We need more people like you sharing their stories so others don't fall victim to the hype.
I hope you feel some comfort in educating others about the risks and I hope it helps with your grief.

I have those for my boys we are allowed to have roosters but the neighbors on one side are real a-holes. I tried rehoming the boys but no one wanted them (I didn't want to get rid of them but at the time it was my only option) this morning I went out and found my one roo gasping and he had thick mucous all over his face. I quickly brought him in removed the collar and cleaned him up. He seems fine now but omg I was terrified and nearly in tears thinking I was going to lose my big bratty rooster. The other 3 seem fine and I checked their collars and they are looser than his was apparently (I check them twice a week sometimes more so when I'm able to be outside with them and not freezing)
It's a buyer beware thing and sorry for your loss. I almost lost mine today and feel like it was negligence on my part but know you did everything you could.

I just lost my rooster today. I have the exact same story as the person who started this thread, and so many others here as well. It IS the collar - it's not negligence. I work from home and I check on my chickens probably 5 or more times per day. I so wish I had known. I did research the collar and saw so many 'good' stories, but I didn't use the right search terms. After I watched my rooster die this morning while I stood helpless, I came in and searched for "no crow collar death" and found this thread. I'm so so sorry for everyone's losses. I'll never use this or any other collar like this again and I really don't recommend it. Maybe it works well for some, but the risk is just too high. I agree with you Tonya, that it can seem like all is well, but then tragedy. Thanks everyone for posting. I may post elsewhere also to raise more awareness.

Thank you both Rebekah Rebekah and Moonshiner. Your posts have helped tremendously.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's such a tragic thing to go through :(

If you find yourself with another rooster, please send me a private message.

I adopt animals that need a forever home, to include quite a few roosters. There are days I use ear plugs...but those days are far and few between. I can send pics and updates. And of course, you & family are welcome to visit the future rooster that I adopt.
Thank you. This is my daughter's post from a couple of years ago. If you are still accepting rooster, please let me know. I just found a home for one of our neighbor's roosters but, as you probably know, because I come across these situations regularly. There are so many roosters that need a home since they are not usually allowed -even in areas where hens are allowed. Gender bias! And, yes, he was a very good rooster. They serve a purpose!

Thank you. You are a good soul. Where are you located? I plan to have a place where I can keep roosters in the near future. Attached are a few photos of a neighbor's rooster that I'm trying to find a home for. I live in the city of Long Beach, CA. This rooster is 6 months old, a beautiful Silkie and very sweet. If you aren't too far away and can provide a good home for him, I'd be thrilled. Maybe I can even take him back one day and/or return the favor.
