Hey yall! Just wondering why my gals don’t sing the egg song? I have eight birds and most of them have started laying in the last few weeks. At first my RIR (she laid first) would sing/make a ruckus before and after she laid and now only does it very seldom after... my EE will only on occasion as well and only about a cluck or two. I don’t hear from the others at all... why do you think that is? I am so sad... :( I really wanted to hear some lovely chicken music as I don’t have a rooster.

Sorry! I'm right there with you. I have a cinnamon queen (Penny) who is the only one laying so far in our mixed flock of five hens. We have gotten eight eggs so far, and she sung a little after the fourth one and that's all. She deposits an egg daily in the nest box and calmly walks away right afterward.

My girls do that too! They started laying about a week ago and the first to lay sang for a loooooong time! And so loudly that the neighbor came over to congratulate us because he heard the egg song! And everyone joined in! Now, they’re all nonchalant about it...

Not all hens sing all the time. Some sqwuak a time or two on the nest and some go on for quite a while throughout the yard. My marans are the loudest, and it seems to go on forever most days, but they’re new layers I’m hoping the novelty wears off for them. ;)

For the past few weeks, though, my flock leader Barred Rock has been molting and not laying. She jumps on the roost and cheers on EVERY other hen laying an egg with the loudest song of them all. The only thing I can do is pick her up and move her out of the coop into the yard and distract her with treats.

She just started squatting again and her tail feathers are back so I’m hoping we get back to normal again.
