We finally caught our little Rhode Island Red getting ready to lay an egg and we all went out to watch. I brought the camera to record her cackling.

She laid her egg without so much as a peep, rearranged her nest a bit then came out without a single sound.

I was actually disappointed and my son particularly was upset he'd end up with a quiet chicken.

Wondering how common that is? We have four total, but are yet to hear noise from any of them (though this is the first time we actually were there when the eggs was laid.)

I have RIR's too and the songs can be confusing.... The first 1 to lay was quiet, then the next put a racket of some sort but not a big deal. And then.... OMG! The newbies that are trying to figure it out are SO LOUD! I actually saved up a carton to give to the nieghbors to say sorry.... And we are on an acre! They are just so loud... And the confusing part for me is that they put up the exact same "song" yesterday when 1 of them got up on the roof of our shed. So it had nothing to do with laying, it was a - hey, wierdo is up on the roof! Hopefully for BOTH of us, they will settle into a song routine when they are use to laying....

Maybe she was bashful and doesn't like an audience when she sings in the shower..........uh, I mean nesting box.

I have a couple of quiet red sexlinks, but the little EE happly greets the egg with her own song FOR them..lol I was actually happy that they werent screemers then ole happychick has decided she'll be the greeter...

OK, I'm happy she doesn't scream!!!

They are pretty quiet all around. Surprised me, but it's nice since we do have neighbors.

They sleep in, too. This was our earliest egg so far, laid around 9:30 AM. Normally, they lay after lunch. I'm sure that'll change as they sort it all out. Still wish I knew who the other one was that has begun laying!

But I still want to hear an egg song from one of them, at least!

my GSL doesnt hardly make a sound...like 5 minutes later she makes quiet sounds..but nothing to announce the egg!

I've got a quiet first-timer too.
My Black Star makes barely a peep, just quietly gets into "her" nestbox and lays her egg.
I'm curious if the other 4 will sing or not when they begin to lay.

All except the Houdan - right now her squawking is nothing like the others clucks - she sounds like a heavy smoker!
Think: Tallulah Bankhead in feathers
Actually I kinda hope she doesn't sing - her Egg Song would probably sound like Heavy Metal.
