I helped a neighbor of my father's find a boar to breed his pot belly sow. well now she's going to have piglets.

He has informed me that he will be giving me a couple pigpets whether I want them or not.

I have always disliked pigs except on my plate. I told him not to inflict those things on me.

He talked me into visiting his pigs. I did, and I admit i was charmed by how well behaved and intelligent the two pigs were. Even the boar was fully trained and a sweet pet.

I am now excited about the pig giving birth despite myself.

dang it.

I guess I'm getting pigs.

That's a cute story, and it describes exactly how we get ourselves sucked into adding critters to our family that we hadn't planned on.

I was at the farm supply store yesterday and on the bulletin board was a flyer for someone with a 40 lb. 3-year-old miniature pig for sale. A sow. It was a housepet!!! I started to walk away from the flyer...turned around and went back and read it again... said to myself "DON'T YOU DARE call about that pig!!!!!!" and made myself walk out without taking the phone number.

If the flyer is still there next week I'm calling about that pig, but keeping my fingers crossed someone else already took her.

A few years ago....I considered getting a piglet to raise for MEAT.

But...I figured that I would need to get "discards" from a local restaurant in order to be able to FEED it.

(My Friend had just SOLD his Restaurant.)

I decided against THAT "project".

I figured why not have it for mini size meat ? Some folks said they are not worthy of meat purposes, too fatty and meat texture is different than our meat production hogs.

that is why i decided i will accept a piglet from him. and i insist on one sow. so i can breed her on occaision and stock my freezer with some home smoked ham.... and sasage... oo and lard for baking.... salt pork for bean....marrow, fat, and ground bones for the chickens..... yum
