No no no no no!!! We did not just see that!

I love to hear them howl! When the local pack of coyotes start howling my young dog does it right back and its so funny! He looks so silly when he does it.

I think we had one here last night. Something pretty big and quiet was after the cat, and our young dog, who rarely ever barks, was barking and growling deep in his chest. Whenever HE goes on alert, I know its some kind of a real threat. Something bigger than a fox or coon. Would love to see one!

Sorry to hear that you have coyotes around. I hope your chickens stay safe from them. We have had problems on the ranch with coyotes, dogs and crosses between the two. It can be really frustrating to see the damage they can do to calves. We had a coyote walk through our cow herd while we were standing within 100 yards of it fishing from a river bank. Between the cows trying to trample it and us shooting at it, I am surprised it survived. We always go armed into our river bottoms because we have mountain lions down there. We haven't been able to nail one of the lions yet but we have killed a lot of coyotes.

Henrietta--
We are right in front of a nature preserve of sorts (110acres+) so coyotes in Durham are quite a common occurance. I worked at the vets for so long and regularly saw smal dogs that were attacked by coyotes or heard of people losing cats so them. One sheltie came in 7 times from attackes-same dog.

Just keep your kitties in, and lock up those babies at night. All will be well!

They come out in our field in the middle of the day yipping and howling. I hate that sound. We even have some here that are jet black and huge, not your normal coyote nasty looking either..

I can't thank you all enough for the shoulder to lean on after that surprise! I know predators of one type or another are something we all face! It was a good reminder of what our priorities are. We really felt we needed to be home before dark to get everyone locked up. We don't usually pen them up when we leave the house but we did yesterday. I forgot to mention that just up the road after seeing the coyote, maybe a quarter mile, we saw two wild turkeys and a bunch of not too big baby turkeys. Maybe Mr. or Ms. Coyote wasn't hungry enough to bug my birds yesterday.

we have a huge field where a pack, (i would say easily 10) stay, just in walking distance about 3-4. possible 5 minutes away, Hear them all night long, and a friend of the family about a mile down the road has a lot of them in his gully right by his house, go out look down bam, probably see them right there.. BUT we never have problems as all together with ours. Grandpas, and aunts dogs we have about 14. And our great pyrenees keeps em away

Thats not true, I killed one not long ago in the day walking right up to where my kids were playing in the front yard.

Never turn your back on a coyote. A lone coyote is not as much of a threat. A pack is quite dangerous.
I'd start thinning them or you'll be overrun.

I hear them howling almost every night around here. Sometimes they're pretty far off, sometimes they're maybe 1/4 mile away. I don't give them a second thought. They're scavengers, they're not going to bother with trying to bust into our coop or dig under our fence.
