I am a libertarian and I think that nearly everything should be allowed. People should be allowed to be stupid and kill themselves in anyway that they choose as long as they don't physically hurt others in the process. Take my word for it, I am way more extreme then any of you on the subject of personal liberty.

Just for the record, I don't smoke or do drugs and only rarely have an alcoholic drink.

That's nice, but a person smoking in a restaurant or bar is harming others. Yes, other patrons can leave, but the employees are stuck. Waiters, waitresses and bartenders are people too.

I am not certain if you are responding to me or just using my post as a jumping off point. I made no reference to whether smoking should be allowed in public places.

But here is my opinion on the subject.

I agree that smoking should be done outside but I think that private business-unless they are somehow getting government money- should decide for themselves if they will allow smoking inside or not. It is up to the patrons to decide if they want to eat a restaurants that allow smoking. I do think that there should be warnings on the doors if a bar or restaurant allows smoking or not.

There don't have to be government rules outlawing smoking in public buildings. If more people simply refused to eat or socialize in areas with smoking, then business who want to attract customers will not allow smoking inside.

I'm just saying that the no smoking laws are there for the safety of the employees, not customers that can choose to not patronize the business.

I agree with you, every time I've seen an argument about where someone can or cannot smoke, it immediately gets turned into an argument about "banning smoking."

I don't care if you smoke. One less person living to 80 and sucking the remaining life out of the social security system I hope to collect from some day. Knock yer socks off, smoke all you want ... but not in my face. I'm even against banning smoking in bars, even though I don't smoke. That just seems un-American. On the other hand, if restaurants had the choice as to whether or not they were smoke-free, I'd only eat at the smoke-free ones (but I'll drink anywhere!).

Just a comment. Smokers have no idea how noxious cigarette fumes are to nonsmokers. If I have to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke it makes it difficult for me to breathe for the next hour or so. Keep in mind that smoking is optional, but breathing is mandatory.

Smoking in or out is just one form of air pollution I get migraines from deisel cars and trucks sitting beside me at a redlight, Perfume makes me physically ill Noone is going to freely admit to polluting the air most offenders are in their own little worlds totally aware they offend. We can't have laws to outlaw everything I try to avoid perfumes and deisel smells I will leave an isle in the store if someone is swimming in perfume and I keep a cloth in the car to cover my face when I have to sit beside the fowl smell of a deisel truck or car. You have to learn to make do or don't complain that the government is taking over completely.

Living in the state with the fewest reported smokers per capita we do have the smoke-out clinics here all over, 2 choices free or mostly free.

My best friend nearly died once (triggered 'asthma' I have this too, but from fewer triggers) from a smoker who was blowing in her face on purpose- he got into lots of trouble. She stopped breathing, there were police involved. (assault, I called for rescue and police came too)
