I have 4 chickens, which is not a lot... but they are super noisy. I have tried everything to keep them quiet but nothing has worked. I’m not talking little clucks, I’m talking egg songs from like 7:30 am-12 sometimes for longer. I can’t own chickens that are noisy because of where I live, my neighbors will complain and that’s fair because it is super annoying. Some background: they are all hens, 3 are laying, the last one just had baby chicks. We just integrated the one that had chicks into our existing flock and it’s going well so far. Our hens aren’t aggressive, but they’ve all had a turn meeting her, and they have lived together for 1 1/2 weeks. They have access to food and water, and we have tried spraying them with water when they make noise.
The noise sounds like they are yelling so I wondered if they were hurt, I go outside and check out what’s going on.... but it is either nothing or someone laying. Does this happen to anyone else? If this doesn’t stop soon I will have to give them away! Help!

What is your coop/pen like? I've noticed that birds that are penned tend to be noisier. Maybe it's a boredom or attention thing.

My chickens free range in half our yard... not the full yard because they will tear up our garden. They never stay in their coop-except for nighttime. Thanks!

There always seems to be at least one that likes to yell bloody murder about nothing. To be completely honest, I prefer the crow of a rooster to a hen who likes the sound of her own voice too much! The way it seems to work here is if I rehome an obnoxiously loud girl, someone else steps up to take her place who's twice as obnoxious. What breed are your ladies? There are definitely breeds that tend to have quieter hens, but unfortunately there's always a few that defy the "quiet breed" characteristic. :idunno

Hi there - I was wondering how your chickens are doing? Mine have been extremely noisy lately as well and I live in suburbia so lots of neighbors around. They are just starting to lay so I read that they tend to get loud during this time. But OMG - two of my six hens are REALLY loud in the mornings. It's stressing me out because I don't want them to be a nuisance. I know some of it is because they want to get out and free range in the mornings as well. Once they are out, they are quiet and busy foraging around. Anyway, just curious to know if it's gotten better or worse or if you've discovered any tricks to minimize the noise.

Thanks!

My girls can be incredibly loud when they want attention! The smallest one actually cock-a-doodles if she can see me in the house and I haven't been out to see them in the morning yet  :D
They did calm down a bit over time.
Good luck :thumbsup

Haha! I avoid going out in the morning as well now because it definitely seems to rile them up if I go see them! I think it's part attention, part going through the egg laying transition but mostly wanting to get out and free range. I think they've gotten used to their schedule and now we are trying to pull the free range time back. We are not always going to be able to let them out and I don't need them causing such a raucous when we can't. It's tough trying to balance keeping the chickens happy, us happy and our neighbors happy :)

I've been squirting the loud ones with water (I don't like doing that but I'm desperate at this point) and we will see if that helps. Also, we are waiting longer and longer to let them out to free range (and shortening the amount of time) in hopes of trying to create a new schedule (and lower their free ranging expectations hahaha).
