normal behaviour for just hatched chicks?

If the feet are curled, tape splits for the toes will work just fine. As for sleeping, if you are only used to buying day olds, they really are usually 3+ days old and up on their feet for a good while. They have enough in them to live for 72 hours after hatch so just let them rest for a few days before you start to worry about eating and drinking. Let it be available and they will eat when ready.

thanks all, I feel much better about it all now.... first time chickie mommy = worry all night and day!

thanks for the link needmorechickens.

We decided to let him/her be for a day or two before we splint the toes... he's only 12 hours old.... and he needs to rest.

Chicks are always really tired after hatching... you would be too if you were about 2 inches long and not very strong and you had to break through a wall to survive!!
