Just wanted to say...I am officially a FARM GIRL...yeah, that's right. I looked that processing job in the face and laughed!! No crying, no puking, I didn't even get grossed out plucking or gutting...although it did help to have a great friend to laugh with and a good instructor!! :) Right BHep & Double??
We will find out how Cottontail tastes tonight!!

Sorry to those of you who do not process your chickens, no offense is meant by this post!!

Ram, I'm not sure what I'm looking for yet. I want 2 or 3 pullets, standard size, good layers... good attitude. Wanna make hubby happy with eggs. Too many bantams, not enough eggs around here!

Ruth, I'm proud of you. I was hard the first time I did it. Now it doesn't bother me. We're planning on some meaties here soon. Just need to build the mobile unit for them. :)

I still cry Farm girl, but we had 2 of our roos in some chicken n' dumplins tonight. they sure taste mighty good but it's still hard for me and all I do is pluck and clean.

You ain't going to eat the one you processed today tonight are you? That will most likely be a pretty tough meal unless it was really young. I would put that bird in the fridge for 3-5 days to cure. Some use the last day to soak in a marinade or whatever to add to the taste.

Matt

and Good for you for being one of us bird eaters. I always thank the bird for it's final contibution to the family.

Now that DoubleA knows where I live, I wouldn't DARE put this guy into the crock pot!! She is VERY anti-crockpot!! LOL.

Matt - what age is the best to cook the same day?? I admit, I did put the bird in the oven, but DH was "ravenous" so he didn't wait for the bird to cook, so I did it all for nothing..LOL. I will say that because of the weather, the processing took so long (that and I am SLOW) that rigor set in, so it was either cook now or break him...

ML - I kept telling myself that he was providing a wonderful sacrifice for our family. I was sad to see him go, but under the circumstances, he had to go.

On a funny note, BHep helped me put on the saddles that I made for the two girls...and five minutes later...Jemimah had hers off and by the time I got to Miss Tiggy, she took hers off!! LOL. Guess it was a little too loose?!? Off to try to make it a little tighter or something.

Im in goldsboro/Dudley NC. Active Duty Air Force, I just hooked up my incubator, its an old jamesway 2940 incubator, it can hatch 2500- 2900 eggs, so if you need any hatched bring them my way, and we will split them :P

Welcome....you are my closest neighbor ..

Hey everybody! NH-glad your processing went ok. I wish somebody lived close enough to me to teach me how to process.

If anyone is intrested I have a 6 month old BO pullet for sale. 15$ she is laying a pale brown egg daily. She is being picked on by my other girls and chased away from food and water. She is a sweeter girl and I hate to see her go but I don't want her to get hurt.
