Blood-curdling sounds are often produced by bobcats.
I second that-I think it sounds like a woman getting murdered when they are in heat. I can only imagine the other noises they make. You can google bobcat sounds.

this link has an aggresive noise and in heat samples posted. they are pretty close to some of the sounds i have heard. note these are just calls hunters use, but they make different variations of these noises as well. in captivity they make what we call- curious, frustrated, playful, defending and a few other vocalizations. and juviniles tend to exaggerate thier sounds and it sound soooo much more dramatic. so a frustrated juvinile trying to get into a coop could make a heck of a fuss. they also tend to be very vocal while eating. they will make a gutteral defending noise if there are other predeators near by trying to steal thier food. i hate it for your chickies but i am kinda jealous if you have wild bobcats. i've never got to experiance a wild one.

I was just telling my neighbor about the sound I heard, and he actually told me that he saw what he thinks was a bobcat chasing my cat across the yard last night. Although, my neighbor is rarely sober, so it's hard to tell how accurate this info might be.

Do bobcats dig?

Long day today. Seems my niece got in an arguement with her BF on Facebook all night, and they broke up. So I had a despondant teenager on my hands.

She wanted to go home. Her mom tried to tell me not to cater to her, and make her stay. Um. Yeah.

And I am home. And hubby returns from his trip tomorrow. And all is well.

Sigh.

Yes they do. Probably not like a coyote or dog though.

So...what is all this I keep reading about candling the eggs?? Do you do this for broody hens or just the ones you are incubating?? Okay...so if I "should" candle...who wants to come over and stick their hands underneath 2 cranky broodies and candle all 18 of my eggs?? Any takers?!?

Oohh... YAY to the stray outdoor cat that's been hanging around (the one we all decided to call Tink)...she chased off a LARGE bird today (I don't think it was a predator, but still...)!! I think she was saddened to have missed "lunch", but she is definitely pregnant (or has recently feasted upon a wild boar or something!!) so perhaps she misjudged her jumping skills!! Hehe. Still, she was protecting my lone chick, so she is #1 in my book!!

On another non-chicken but oddly strange note - I make my own bread, and thus I make my own breadcrumbs. I decided to make a big batch and store it...well I went to use some today and the sterile mason jar I kept them in actually smelled like WINE!! I cannot figure out HOW my bread is fermenting when there is nothing in it that would lend itself to a wine. LOL I even made DH smell it to ensure it wasn't just post pregnancy smelling issues!!

Apparently my sniffer is still working!! Now...to keep or get rid of the breadcrumbs, that's the real question!! LOL
