North Carolina

I hope I am posting this in the right place, if not please feel free to move me. Can someone tell me how I find out about all the flock swaps here in NC? My kids and I just love those things, they are so much fun. I need to do a liitle ahead planning to get to them though. Seems I always find out about them only a couple of days before. Is there a list with all the swaps and auctions on it? Distance is not an issue as long as it's not on a school night :p

Thanks

Age? If they are older, I don't see any boys.

Hmmm... your guess is as good as mine... I bought them at WCA, weekend before last. They sold as roos.... but they didn't look like roos to me either. I will be happy with them either way.. as I do have my plans for them

I would be very happy "if" they turn out to be hens... but roos will work too.

Good morning folks

hope everyone is happy this fine day

the ducklings we got at WCA were not
handled much at all and think people are the
boogieman.......they run and squeak/cheep
if we get near them. They still have baby down
so we are putting them in the coop at night and out in
a small pen for the day......

I just worry a predator will get them.........

so they get caught and touched at least twice a day
and petted and all but what treats would help with
getting them warm to us?

Like I said... I am up for learning a new skill... you never know when it might come in handy.... but one question for you on shearing the rabbits... can I use regular hair cutting shears on them? I tried to snip hairballs out of the buck rabbit's coat, when it turned hot.... but I snipped him a time or two... it is really hard to distinguish what was fur and where the skin started. I figured the electric shears would work much better than scissors. I felt so bad about snipping him. He didn't even flinch. Hubby was holding him.
I never liked clipping mine either. I always combed them out during molt. More time consuming, especially when I had 50 of them, but less stressfull. However, I don't think the clippers work well on them. I think the fiber is too fine. You can always test it and see though. But sometime when one is handy, I can show you a way to make sure you clip wool and not skin. But trust me...everyone who has clipped a rabbit has clipped skin at some point. It happens.

Thanks
As far as I know, there is no list. WCA (Wicked Chicken Auction) is regular. They are every Sunday. They also have a Facebook page if you want to keep track of them. As far as swaps go, I think the one at TSC is about to get regulated a bit; at least there has been discussion on doing so. The swap folks seem to all post on Craigslist, so that might be something you want to watch.

And...nice to meet you!

Good morning everyone! I did NOT sleep in this morning, so beat the rain and got my chores done at first light, like I should. The chickens and sheep were pleased to see me at "proper" breakfast time!

All the babies are doing well. I'm setting up a cage this moring for the silver phoenix pair. They're so tame they are a danger to themselves at their size. They don't recognize feet as something to move away from. I watch for them, but hubby expects everything to get out of his way and will eventually step on one. So I'll prevent that by caging them for a while. DS was thrilled when I told him I got them...after he looked them up. He can't wait until they get big enough that he can have hackle feathers for fly tying! Now he and hubby are talking pheasants for the tail feathers....sigh. Hubby needs to get to building!

Going shopping with my lovely DD today, as she must head home to DC tomorrow.

lost my second Cochin this morning or last night. she was acting strange all day yesterday and i had to get her last night to put her in the coop. She was very sluggish last night. This morning she was dead. Could it be just a coincidence that both Cochin's died and they were from the same person do i need to medicate my entire flock?

Thanks
craigslist usually has them listed. They are usually on saturdays

Seeing as how you are allergic to onions... are there any other "food" allergies out there, that some of us cooks may need to know about?? I think it might be a good idea to post any food allergies, any of you might have, so we can either work around them or at least say "Hey... don't eat that... there's onions in it!" I know Alex is an EMT... but we do not want to have to use her services if we can help it.

Yep... she is being too hard on herself. Me and my hubby have been raised around gardens all our lives. So it kind of comes as second nature to us. Give yourself time... you'll get it. DH gets out in our garden and tills it with a tiller to keep the grass down.

We think Beth is the best... because she "is" the Best!
DD & I have TOO many allergies, so I usually bring stuff for us because it is such a pain & inconvenience on others. (Think soy, dairy & onions and you will understand, sadly). Besides...Alex REFUSED to bust out her OB kit for me...maybe I want her to have to epi-pen me!! LOL...JK
I am not trying to be too hard on myself, but this is our second attempt at growing stuff and we seem to grow grass despite spending over a month tilling & re-tilling. I am just discouraged, that's all. Was hoping to learn to can and freeze our surplus...now I am hoping to get enough for a meal!!
As for Beth being THE best...i agree. She has been amazingly helpful & generous to me since day 1!! I couldn't begin to thank her enough for everything!! There are others who have been wonderful too, but Beth truly "takes the cake"!! OOhh...maybe I'll make a big cake for everyone!! Hmm...what flavor?? I'm all for PB & Chocolate

Chick update: Final count - 11 total chicks...would have been 13 but mama Maran stepped on 2 eggs right in front of me. The shells didn't crack like usual ones, so later DH and I went out there and when I removed all the eggs, I noticed that the 2 she stepped on...had babies fully (or so it seemed to me) developed. I think they might have hatched in a day or two, but alas it was not meant to be. Sadly, DD#1 kept telling us to be quiet because the babies were sleeping (she saw them in the eggs). I think she was mimicking me, for when we had a chick hatching feet first, I shushed her and "helped" the chick get its foot out and left the rest up to it to see if it would survive or not... it did. I think she was thinking the chicks just need our help and would be fine. Not sure how much she understands at her age (19mo), but she did tell them "nite nite". I told her that her chicks did not wake up and that they were sleeping peacefully forever. In a sweet/morbid way, she asked for "kitty" (the stray that helps protect our flock...so I guess she is our adopted barn cat?!?) to "kiss" them "nite nite". The kitty just had a litter (somewhere) and I think the "fresh" chicks might have been too tempting of a meal for her...needless to say, she was not allowed NEAR those eggs. As for the other chicks, she could care less. She walks into the coop with me when I feed/water everyone...she would much rather have a good scratch behind the ears - still I don't let her near the wee ones...I may be naive, but I am not dumb...food is food when you live out "on the streets". Okay, enough cliches from me today!!
On a funny note, I am growing rotten potatoes in our compost pile!! There are green potatoes sprouting on top of our compost with shoots bigger than those potatoes in our potato box!!

Good Morning Everyone.
welcome-byc.gif
Welcome to the new folk!! I am relatively new to NC, so I have NO idea where most places are. All I know is that I am far far away from civilization so I must be far away from most cities (especially since most people seem to be in the mountain areas!!). Still, WELCOME and I hope you enjoy yourselves. Everyone here has been amazingly supportive and informative - not to mention just the best grouping of people you will ever "meet".
