YAY!! Internet is up and running...for the moment at least. WELCOME to all the new people!!

Chicken news: I have ANOTHER broody!! My Alpha Hen decided that it was her time, and boy oh boy is she a MEAN one!! I was feeding everyone last night and locking up the coop...she was attacking my shoes because I was close to her box. This girl was as fluffed up as she possibly could - she literally was filling the box. This ought to be interesting, as I am NOT checking under her nor am I going to move her until she settles down a little (IF she settles down). I hope she stays cool while hanging out in the barn all day.

Today is a bitter sweet day for me. My oldest daughter turns 2 today and while I am excited for her, I am also saddened that she is no longer my "little" girl. She even said, "pffff, tough" after telling us "ow, hurt" with her shots today. She's definitely a "big" girl now...

I am NOT ready for this. Hmmm...I need more babies - good thing I have a broody!!

I think the rain hit us late last night, as it had not rained yet when I went to bed. Boo!! I love storms!!

Have a great day everyone. I'm off to bake a dairy free cake and make homemade chicken nuggets as a special dinner/dessert for the birthday girl!! She already requested PB&J for breakfast!! LOL

Tried to make some sense of what I have in birds....hens...rooster...keepers...sale birds.

Threw my hands up and came inside. It is just too hot and sticky.

I have a question for those of you with guineas. We have five...we think. One of our little feathery bug eaters doesn't look like the others (remember that Sesame Street song?). I thought he was just a different color, but now I'm starting to wonder if he's a guinea at all. Can you guys take a look at my pics and tell me what you think? If he's not a guinea (and we're using the "he" pronoun randomly, we haven't successfully sexed any of them either), what is he? Thanks so much!!

BTW - the guineas are REALLY enjoying the little population explosion of cicadas we've had the last few days. Of course, those bugs are armored, so step one for eating them is apparently beat the heck out of them first! Our hens are also having a blast with them - go bug hunters! LOL

That is a chicken. More specific a young female by the looks of her.

Matt

Is it possible she's a bantam? She was hatched at the same time as the guineas, and is exactly the same size (they're about 7 weeks old), and I don't think she's growing as fast as our hens did. Her coloring is very similar to our EE's.

AWE!! She thanks you!! She also says once you know what sale birds you have, she'd love to know...in case she doesn't get that horsey for her birthday, we might have to substitute a few chickens or bunnies or goats or cows or lambs...something!! LOL...I told her she could go to your house and LOOK at your horse (and clean up after it)...she said, "Oh- Tay". LOL Horses are a PHASE for little girls right, I mean she will out grow her desire to have one right?? PLEASE!!

We have had a great afternoon thus far...it's rained and oh yeah, we've had rain. LOL I planned to do a finger painting session (to send her foot prints in the shape of a butterfly to the grandparents as a thank you note) but I am NOT doing that indoors and the rain ruined it. Ah well, now I have an excuse to try a new recipe (Almond Butter Ganoche Frosting anyone??) with a new dairy-free cake recipe (Yay King Arthur Flour to the rescue!!) made in the cake pan...it's a repurposed Depression Era cake recipe (for those wealthy people who had flour to spare). I'm making homemade puffy paint, play dough and finger paint (all of which need to be cooked and thus cooled before use) - hoping to get at least something accomplished before everyone wakes up!! Then I am going to try to make homemade chicken nuggets for the birthday girl!!

Yes, a day of fun in the kitchen with my little chef!!

I hope you all get some of this rain as it has at least cut the humidity down a little - man do I HATE the humidity!!

Anything is possible....it is also possible for Guineas & chickens to breed. She could be a "mule". Ya never know !!!

I have never seen one.... just read about them.

Yeah, and that would go right along with what my hubby likes to call my "weirdness magnet." I guarantee that the guy my hubby bought them from thought they were all guineas - he'd have charged us more if one was a chicken! LOL She was the only one with that coloring in the group, the rest have that gray/brown coloring and stripey heads. Well, when they're a little bigger they're going to go in with the hens anyway, so it won't matter. And hey, we'll get some more eggs out of it!

I was planning on getting keets from TarheelBirdy, but we ran into these little guys at Tractor Supply, and for once hubby wasn't in the mood to wait.

We were being eaten alive by mosquitoes and fleas, and the birds really have helped with that.

If you got these at TSC then that is a probably little EE.

From a flock swap at TSC - not the TSC store itself. Love going to those on Saturdays - one guy had three turkeys last time. A kid (about 10, maybe) asked the guy what the turkeys' names were and when the guy selling them kind of shrugged, I said, "Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter." Those are some BIG birds.

I'm not too worked up about getting a chicken with the guineas. They all looked the same (except for the coloring) until about a week ago. That's when hubby was like, "Um, that one doesn't look much like the other guineas..."
