North Carolina

We had rain this afternoon, so couldn't work for a bit. Went back out after the rain stopped. We got all the rabbit cages back up, but with a complety different support system than we used before. I got all the previously bleached things put back inside the barn. That took about an hour! The tubs are still full of things soaking, but I won't get those scrubbed until tomorrow. At least I can lay them out in the rabbit cages to dry instead of on the ground collecting ants. After that's done I start on the next place to clean...that'll be Juvenile detention. It won't be so bad, as we already removed cages, bowls, buckets, etc. from all pens not in use. So I just have to rake it out, powerwash and scrub it, and bleach it down.

We've got company coming on Friday, so I also have to set up the guest room and clean the house. Plus, I have to start back to work! I'm going in for half days this week. Hubby is leaving on a trip tomorrow, returning Wednesday, then leaving Monday next for a week. I'll be having a good time cleaning pens while he's gone! I may not be fast, but I'll get it done. With company coming this weekend we won't get any butchering done, but I'll still get some scrubbing done. And I'm buying eggs to feed them! I'm not giving up my last good eggs for a while to feed people I haven't seen in ten years. Nope, not me! I'm too selfish for that!

See you tomorrow!

I wish you all the best with your planning and the re-stocking your flock, Hollow.

these are the coops i just built for my chickens when it's time to leave the brooder. (2 week olds) i'm gonna build a run between two of them. the sides lift up for easy access to the eggs/cleaning and they are waterproof when closed. vinyl floor, nesting boxes, and roosting bar inside. i'm coop crazy!!! i actually built three because i love to build them.

Nice coops.... take some notes... DH.

The really weird thing about my hen is that she lays large sized eggs. They are the same exact size as a store bought egg. She is only the size of my Silkie who lays tiny tiny eggs. Is it normal for OEGs to lay large eggs?

Its so weird that her ears are two colors...
I have/had several birds with legs/spurs that are different colors

Always thought it came with the odd feather colors that show up now and again!

Did anyone make it to WCA today???

Did it have anything interesting?

Meg...........I can bring you eggs when you
need them and I can put them in the package
area by the gate.....just let me know when
you need some......no reason you have to
suffer through "store bought" eggs

Honey, that's a wonderful thought but I'll not having you drive the entire length of the county to deliver eggs to me! Although, once the quarantine is lifted I'm sure I can meet up with ou or someone else and get some eggs now and then. Maybe even at WCA...

Speaking of which, the sprayer I got to replace my broken one was better than I thought. I'll be getting a couple more to stash about the property. And I'll have one in my car when I do come to WCA...just for spraying my tires at the gas station down the road before I head home. If anyone else wants tires sprayed those days, just come along and we'll get them all!

Thx Bhep,

We are just outside on Goldsboro city limits!

Odd item for anyone that may want. I have found kittens under the shed. I guess the momma thought it was a safe place for them, but I know what the hubby thinks about cats. This is not the first time she has done this and I plan to try to get close enough to her to take her to the vet, or something. There were cats out in the woods here about 7 years ago and I got them all fixed and homes eventually. I don't want her to go after any of my young birds either!

So we now have birds to trade or sell, cats to anyone who can give them a warm barn or home, and what ever is extra in the garden, or never got transplanted into the garden (tomatoes, basil etc.)!

Also, I would love to know who is in our area. NC has so many different micro-climates that the weather is not all the same ... (except HOT!) We thought we were getting rain, but no rain; maybe today? My garden needs it!

I haven't added up the total in materials, it did take about 20 hrs of labor. A labor of love though. I have actually thought about building more and selling them, I would not make much, but its a fun hobby. Plus I would get to meet other chicken lovers. I thought about taking one to lincolnton in sept to the pow wow down there. Thx for all the nice comments!

Rooster or Hen??

From what I can tell with my flock... The more splashed colors are boys, and the little girls have wider primary and tail feathers. Also, the feathers that start to cascade from the back down behind the wings and around the sides are much thinner on most little guys. My little girls don't grow as fast and upright as the boys either! Oh! and the markings are more muddled on the head and neck area as they will become very vivid!

5 pics if they can help. I take many!!!! First is the Ameraucana pullet, second is a young cockerel and he has gotten much bigger and brighter since this was taken. third is his father at about the same age. and the fourth on the bottom is the same as the third taken about 4 weeks ago. fifth on bottom is a young pullet that was raised with Black Beard, (Rooster in pic 4 & 3).

I really hope this can help you; enjoy your babies!!!!
also notice a difference in the markings on the head; more contrast on the males. This is true with these birds' mixed offspring too!
