If you use dye or lipstick, you can't just put it on the vent. You need to massage the hen's back to get her to open the cloaca(opening to reproductive/egg tract) and use it there. Dye is easier and works if dripped directly into the cloaca. The problem is that if the dye absorbs in too far you can actually get dye inside the egg. Well, it is only a problem if you sell eggs for eating. It only lasts for 1-3 eggs depending on the productivity of the hen. I have done this 3 times and it worked twice.

Oh, if you use lipstick, it needs to be some that comes off easily and needs to be placed well inside the vent.

Well, we got our first egg yesterday which was very exciting; but much to our chagrin one of our girls laid it in the housing portion of the coop on the pine shavings and NOT in the nest box which we had built and prepared including wooden eggs to let them know where to lay. I'm hoping that this is just a mistake on her part and hope that the other four girls don't follow suit.

I never thought I'd be so excited about an egg! It was also the best tasting egg I have ever had! YUM!

Ok......so BYC is not working so good for me........
no color choises or even the cutie faces......just
plain old this.

We have decided to down-size how many breeds
we will have and are going to sell the Langshan pair,
two rumpless Araucana pairs and some of the old
australorp hens and EEs. If you know anyone looking
for these, please send them my way......thanks :-D

Congrats on the first egg, always exciting! More than likely they will find the nest box, when they first start though it's like oops what just fell out of my rear end?
