I don't have an exact count.... but some where about 180. And that is after a serious downsize from over 300. That does not include all the chicks or various ages in the brooders.

And to be fair....over 40 are bantams and just should not count

Also does not include ducks, geese, peacocks, turkey, pheasants and quail.

That will add an additional 49.

And I won't even try to count the Guineas.... I think 25-30. OOO and pigeons, forgot those too... *sigh* only have about 12-15 of those.

So Yeah.... I have too many.

I GOT THE JOB!!

Went in for the interview and was offered the job! I start Tuesday - basically the day after my classes end. It's an awesome job - it's also in Raleigh, so a bit of a drive for me. I'm so excited!

Thanks to everyone who prayed and crossed for me!
Totally awesome! I'm so pleased for you!

"Too many" is relative. When they become a chore rather than a pleasure, then you have too many. As long as they are fun, (and fed!) it's not possible to have too many. There. That's proper chicken math!

Can someone suggest how many hens and how many roosters I should get to start having them lay for chicks? I dont want to get alot. I am thinking 5 hens and 1 rooster.....
Depending on breed; there are so many.

5-9 should be a good #

A RIR can fertilize up to 12 hens a day, but he does not need that many. I usually put 1 roo in with about 6 pullet/hens in a coop separated from the rest.

Good luck!

I am getting a RIR rooster and 5 barred rock hens......so I think ill keep it under 10 per rooster.
