Hello Fellow North Carolina BYCers!!! I live in Monroe NC , 15 min. from the SC line and 45 min. from charlotte. I help run KBhatchery , we have Pearl White Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, Silkies (buff and blue) , Jumbo Pekin Ducks , Yellow Golden Pheasants , and Silver Pheasants. Pearl White leghorns just started laying on 7-15 only one day before they were to be 5 months old. Now on 7-27 I am collecting 5 eggs each day. so I have 10 matured Hens. We also have 5 males and we only need 2. the other 3 where for back up incase any died before reaching maturity , or if some may have died during delivery from murray mcmurray. Above are a few photos of our White Leghorn Flock :D

Hi guys!
Haven't said much lately, been working a lot but I need everyone's thoughts on this.
I am having to move my chickens away from our house because one of the people we share land with has low immunities from a host of health issues and this week he went to the hospital and came back to tell us he had a bacterial infection from being around chicken poop. So... We need to move the chickens to the land we will be building our house on early and while it is within walking distance of the house we are in now, it is way out of the way and closer to predators.
So this thing needs to be a million more times secure than any other chicken coop we've built to date.

And since we are building completely from scratch, I'm looking for ideas and tips.
What has worked for you and what hasn't? What are things you wish you had done when building your coop?

Thanks! And happy Saturday!

This article from The Chicken Chick is pretty good for ideas. I especially like that she mentions two-step locking devices.

Thanks cknnewbie! I needed someone to tell me its going to be okay. Super stressful day! Yard sale and moving at the same time. Thank God neighbors r yardsalling with us! We r taking shifts! I really thought we'd have done better at the yard sale today with that auction right down the road but....that's just a hot summer day for ya! Chickens broke out of the pen this morning. I guess my niece and nephew went to look at them and moved the latch. It's no big deal but I didn't want them to chase any customers! Happy Saturday all!

Wow wingate is literally right down 74 from me. and the silkies are not show quality, guess I should have read the fine print on Muray McMurray :/ but they are still beautiful. Too many males though, ment to only get 3 or 4 of Blue and Buff Males but ended up with like 6 or 7 Males in each. Total Bummer, may just sale all silkies and go for Barred rocks or New Hampshires . not too sure yet! Thank you for the welcome moomoodiddy !!

Beth - I only have chicks and the pullets from hollow right now but when I did have hens, I never had many broodys... hoping that the next batch are a bit more broody, but maybe not as broody as yours!
