North Carolina

It could be just one bird carrying it, it could be that both parents carry it and this one just got the lucky combo to have some feathers on the legs that might go away as it grows up.
Okay thank you! I guess it has to be he just got the unusual combo since none of the other chicks have feathered feet. Anyways thank you!

I just felt like sharing. Having chicks has absolutely made me fall in love with my Cuckoo Marans. I'll have to post some more recent pictures of them, but they are so cute now!!!! They are absolutely friendly to the last feather. Whenever you open their pen they just run up to you and kind of sit on your feet waiting for attention. And whenever you have food in your hand they literally jump up into your hand and eat. They are so sweet! Out of our four that hatched, we think ones a roo and the other two or hens. They are all really sweet. I'm not entirely sure if the ones a roo or not. Our friends that hatched them think the comb on it is more prominent than the others but I'm not sure. I'll have to post some more pics!

Oh I also just felt like saying how angry I am with someone out in Greensboro. At the time we were trying to add on to our flock. Well we had scheduled to pick up some birds from Wildsriver and Hollowoak. We were going to pick up some Black Jersey Giants from someone after we got some pullets from Wildsriver, but on the way to the second person in Greensboro we got that terrible call, saying our Marans had died in the dog attack. Well we talked to the guy, rescheduling for the next week. Needless to say, we never got our JG's. He just randomly announced that he sold the rest of the birds even the ones we reserved!!! This really ticked us off.

My mother really wanted Australorps and Jersey Giants in our flock and was really disappointed when we couldn't get the Giants. We managed to find the Australorps, but I am really wanting to find her some Giants sometime. Not expecting any replies to this, I just saw a post about Jersey Giants and it rekindled my anger towards the guy!

I know there are threads about what people's favorite breeds are, but I'm just kind of wondering what my fellow North Carolinian's favorites are. So what is your favorite breed? I personally love all of our breeds, but really like our Cuckoo Marans and Buff Orpingtons. I still like our Australorps and RIRs, but they just don't seem as friendly as our Orps and Marans. So whats your favorite?

Alright today really sucks! My grandmother had to go in for surgery today, because her knee replacement contracted an infection. I am not currently home and my mom just sent me a text saying that one of my precious little Maran chicks died!

I guess I am just not meant to have little Cuckoo Marans! First off, our original died in the dog attack with my aunt, one of our chicks died soon after hatching, and now one of them just died and we can't figure out why?!? I don't even know if its the little roo or one of the hens...

Why?!?!?!?

DST I'm sorry that happened :(

After I hatch out these Blue Isbars I am getting some Blue Jersey Giants to hatch out.
Where are you getting your eggs? I might be able to convince my mom to hatch a few now that we will be at the house a little bit more since I start school tomorrow.

Is there any place where you can personalize what eggs you get in your carton? Like lets say you order 12 all together and you get like 4 Blue Giants, 4 Australorps, and 4 Cuckoo Marans? Something like that, or can you only get one specific breed?

All my rarer breed eggs (the Isbars, Lavender Orpingtons, Blue Jersey Giants) I've always gotten from breeders on ebay.
You have to be real careful and read all their print, look at all the pics, & read their reviews.
A lot of times they give the name of their farm so I google that too before I bid.
But when you want breeds that aren't easily accessible, I think that's the way to go.
I also have had really high hatch rates, lowest about 60% and highest was 100%.
I've actually had significantly better hatches off mail order ebay eggs than eggs I have bought from local sellers.

But prices on ebay do go pretty high with shipping.
The Blue Isbars I have now I paid just under $50 for 6 eggs...

Okay thank you! Our friends that hatched our Cuckoo Marans just told me that after our schedule calms down they wouldn't mind lending me their rooster (Lavender Orp) to create what they called "pastel babies" (breeding him with our Buff Orps). Australorps and Orpingtons are some of my favorite breeds so I wouldn't mind mixing them too. Our friend just did this on accident (not knowing their hen was an Australorp) and now have around 10 to fifteen Aurpalorp chicks running around.

Anyway I don't think I should do anything else with chicks until we get our complete and permanent coop set up and are able to create a brooder. Unless one of our hens decides to go broody, but that would be pointless right now since we just got rid of our rooster. Anyways thanks for the input and advice. I will most definitely put it to use in the future, but I think right now I just shouldn't do anything with chicks until we can figure out our situation completely and recover a little bit after having to repair our driveway... We had a pretty big sized sink hole that opened up in our driveway, causing lots of problems and requiring more money than we would like to fix. Would preferably not need to pay anything, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks to you all!
