Well, DH seen one of the new batches of new chicks that a broody hatched out, and just shook his head. Boy if he only knew of the other two batches in the other chicken house and the broody sitting on eggs in the bushes, not to mention the chicks I have at my parent's house and the ones still cooking at a great friend's house

Hey guys, I've got a question: one of my hens is laying her egg out in the dirt in the run. There are 3 nest boxes, they only use 2, but twice in the last week, she has laid outside. New layers, my girls are only 5.5mos old. It's definitely one of the wyandottes, but I have no idea who. I'm leaving them cooped a bit longer today in hopes of getting the egg inside instead of muddy. Also, noticing lots of soft butt feathers around, is that the beginning of molting?

We got an adult bird once and thought she wasn't laying
Like 3 weeks later we found almost 20 eggs under the shed!!!
We ended up having to get rid of her, so I can't give any advice on fixing it, but I'm guessing it's fairly common

Golf balls (I use the faux balls) in the nesting box have always worked well for us. Even if they are free ranging, they go back to lay.
